MS Office 2021 install error

I just installed a fresh copy of Wine 9.0 with no other versions installed.

When I try to run the MS Office 2021 setup.exe and do the install 32-bit version, I get an error 30088-45, followed by the "Couldn't install" screen with the error 0-2031 (17002) message.

I have no idea what either error code means or what I need to do to fix this.

Any assistance and/or comments are appreciated.

Have you installed 32-bit Wine?

I think so - the Program Files x86 directory exists on the C drive.

I also have both .wine and ;/wine32 directories in my home directory.

Anything else I can check?

I cannot begin to tell you how unhelpful this web page is.

1. There are no clear instructions on how to install wine or which version (wine32 or wine64) is needed. (I tried just plain wine, and it does not run 32 bit code at all).

2. I tried setting WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/win32 winecfg, and I could not see any viable effect, but it did not seem to hurt anything.

3. On the page referenced above, it says:

"2. Add to registry DWORD "HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct2D/max_version_factory" with value "0". You can use winetricks and
regedit for this.
3. Add to registry DWORD "HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct3D/MaxVersionGL" with value "30002" (hexadecimal). You can use
winetricks and regedit for this."

These registry folders do not exist. In fact, HKCU also does not (I decoded it), but there is no HKCU/Software/Wine/Direct<anything> in the registry.

This is more frustrating than using a Windows VM, which I abhor. This is my first real stab at getting Wine to be of use, and it is unbelievably difficult and frustrating without any clear set of working instructions.

I am running Xubuntu 24.04.1, wine-9.0 (Ubuntu 9.0~repack-4build3) (32-bit install only).

I have searched the web extensively and never found anything better than here, and this is not helpful so far.
