Starcraft 2, oblivion, potentially skyrim and dota2?

Post by fluffy »

Hello! I'm considering to get Linux on my computer, and do you guys think it would be reasonable easy to start up skyrim at the release date without TOO much work?

Does starcraft 2 run easily? Oblivion? and potentially DoTA2?

I know it might be difficult to answer about the Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but since I think you guys know your sh***. I thought you'd might have an idea :)

Best regards; FLUFFY!

It is difficult to know whether an unreleased game will work.
In general, you cannot assume that a game will "just work", or work at all, with wine.

Don't know. See http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=11123
Oblivion?
Yes. I played Oblivion for a long time using wine, works well.
I had the Oblivion Oscuro Overhaul + many other mods and worked all great. One thing that will probably not work is the Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE) that is necessary for some MODs, none of which I actually needed after all.

I had to tweak wine a little bit, but it might not be needed anymore.
See again the appdb, in this case:

and potentially DoTA2?
no idea, not release yet, so who knows..

The best bet for Skyrim is that it won't work at all with Wine. Just look at the list of newest apps in AppDB they mostly rated as garbage in the test results:

WineHQ - Newest apps

Oblivion is looking good on Wine just check the link provided by claudio.

StarCraft 2 for now is unplayable. Even on the most powerful computers you will get 15 to 30fps (which is totally uplayable and unacceptable). If you look in AppDB you will also find over a dozen bug reports related to that game.

Here is the AppDB for Dota 2:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=13522

the Beta version has been rated as Gold (it could be even Platinum).

Generally games on Wine get quite significant performance drop and if Skyrim will work with Wine you will probably get the half fps of that from Windows (maybe even less).

It's not really surprising that Starcraft 2 runs badly. It's a cpu bound game already, and on top of that is the direct3d > opengl conversion. Many of the CPUs listed in the appdb are AMD btw, which are slow even on windows for this game.

As for Skyrim, I reckon there is a good chance it will run reasonably well. From most reports Skyrim isn't that heavy, and it uses an updated version of the engine used with Fallout 3/NV and Oblivion, all of which work great on wine. Not to say it will work, though, you never know what bugs will come up when a new game is released.

OP, if you already have Windows, don't get rid of it, just avoid it when you can.

First try to get it to work in Wine, and if it doesn't work after trying various things, resort to Windows. Each new Wine version, try again. If you have Windows, then you can do dll overrides.

Also, if you want to help Wine out in getting a game to work, it helps if you can compare how well it worked in Windows.

But if you don't have Windows, you can be patient with Wine until it gets the game working, which can be a while. If your old computer had a Windows lisence, you might be able to use that. Or you can consider buying Windows. ReactOS isn't there yet.
