Application does not start

Post by Francesco Pietra »

Following upgrading from Debian Linux etch to Debian Linux lenny (i386) one application (out of two) does not start any more with wine. The other one starts and works fine.

The one that does not start:

francesco@deb32:~$ wine "c:\ACDFREE5\CHEMSK.EXE"
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin c:\ACDFREE5\CHEMSK.EXE ...
fixme:ole:CoResumeClassObjects stub
/usr/bin/wine: line 536: 6578 Terminated $XMESSAGE -timeout 30 -buttons " Dismiss ":0," Never display this message again ":3 -title "Wine Launch Window" -default " Dismiss " "Invoking $WINEBIN/$WINE_BIN_NAME $@ ...

This dialog box is a temporary status dialog to let you know
that Wine is attempting to launch your application.

Since Wine is still very much in a development stage,
many applications will fail silently.
This dialog box is your indication
that we're *trying* to run your application.

This dialog box will automatically disappear after 30 seconds,
or after your application finishes.

You can permanently disable this dialog by selecting
the option below.
" 2>/dev/null

I checked that the application is still where it should be. Should I pose the problem to the Debian list?

Thanks

As I have multimedia in my sources.list, wine was surely upgraded. Usually it is not easy to downgrade; in my experience is a route into problems (unless, perhaps, one is really a software expert

francesco@deb32:~$ wine -v

wine: could not load L"c:\\windows\\system32\\-v.exe": Module not found
Wine failed with return code 126

Did you also upgrade wine? Have you tried downgrading wine
to the
previous version to see if that 'fixes' it?

Download the .deb from the archives, and install wine dpkg -i. You can
run sudo apt-get upgrade after testing to get the newest one back.

I was partly wrong below. The other wine application that I said starts and works OK, actually is not fully operative. That database fails as to the "search". It launchs correctly:

francesco@deb32:~$ wine "c:\program Files\askSam\askSam6\database.exe"
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin c:\program Files\askSam\askSam6\database.exe ...
fixme:actctx:parse_depend_manifests Could not find dependent assembly L"Microsoft.Windows.Common-Controls"
fixme:msvcrt:__lconv_init stub
fixme:shdocvw:PersistStreamInit_InitNew (0x16cdd0)
err:ole:ITypeInfo_fnInvoke did not find member id -518, flags 0x4!
err:ole:ITypeInfo_fnInvoke did not find member id -517, flags 0x4!
fixme:shdocvw:OleInPlaceObject_InPlaceDeactivate (0x16cdd0)
fixme:shdocvw:OleObject_Close (0x16cdd0)->(1)
fixme:win:LockWindowUpdate (0xe010e), partial stub!
fixme:win:LockWindowUpdate ((nil)), partial stub!

and allows most commands, except "search" (which worked fine before upgrading to lenny).

You have ancient version on Wine. Upgrade -
http://winehq.org/site/download-deb
I have upgraded to 'lenny'. The repository you indicated is for 'etch', which uses the older system of libraries.

Second - you are not correctly starting application - read
FAQ (first question) - http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ
The part about what the current directory should be.

If the repositories indicated in my sources.list are correct

deb http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ binary/
deb-src http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ source/

why wine was not upgraded?

First of all if you want to answer the question DO NOT TOP POST!

Why is that a question to us? You have been told to upgrade Wine. Did you do that? If so, what does 'wine --vesion' say? If not, upgrade to new version of Wine (60, 61 or RC1).

Why is that a question to us? You have been told to upgrade
Wine.
OK, though the repositories you suggested (for "etch") are not compatible with the new libraries (as in "lenny")

Did you do that? If so, what does 'wine
--vesion' say?
Before doing anything for wine:

francesco@deb32:~$ wine --version
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin --version ...
wine-0.9.59-1

Then I removed wine completely

apt-get --purge remove wine

Then I commented out the sourceforge repositories in my sources.list as sourceforge holds old versions of wine.

Then I installed the latest deb package from debian official repositories, and

francesco@deb32:~$ wine --version
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin --version ...
wine-0.9.59-1

The situation as I described before for the two packages to run with wine was unchanged.

If not, upgrade to new version of Wine
(60, 61 or RC1).
Where them?

Thanks
