Application does not start

Following upgrading from Debian Linux etch to Debian Linux lenny (i386) one application (out of two) does not start any more with wine. The other one starts and works fine.

The one that does not start:

francesco@deb32:~$ wine "c:\ACDFREE5\CHEMSK.EXE"
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin c:\ACDFREE5\CHEMSK.EXE ...

This dialog box is a temporary status dialog to let you know
that Wine is attempting to launch your application.

Since Wine is still very much in a development stage,
many applications will fail silently.
This dialog box is your indication
that we're *trying* to run your application.

This dialog box will automatically disappear after 30 seconds,
or after your application finishes.

You can permanently disable this dialog by selecting
the option below.
" 2>/dev/null


I checked that the application is still where it should be. Should I pose the problem to the Debian list?

You have ancient version on Wine. Upgrade - http://winehq.org/site/download-deb

Second - you are not correctly starting application - read FAQ (first question) - http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ
The part about what the current directory should be.

As I have multimedia in my sources.list, wine was surely upgraded. Usually it is not easy to downgrade; in my experience is a route into problems (unless, perhaps, one is really a software expert

Did you also upgrade wine? Have you tried downgrading wine
to the

Download the .deb from the archives, and install wine dpkg -i. You can
run sudo apt-get upgrade after testing to get the newest one back.

I was partly wrong below. The other wine application that I said starts and works OK, actually is not fully operative. That database fails as to the "search". It launchs correctly:

Why is that a question to us? You have been told to upgrade Wine. Did you do that? If so, what does 'wine --vesion' say? If not, upgrade to new version of Wine (60, 61 or RC1).

OK, though the repositories you suggested (for "etch") are not compatible with the new libraries (as in "lenny")

Did you do that? If so, what does 'wine

Before doing anything for wine:

francesco@deb32:~$ wine --version
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin --version ...
wine-0.9.59-1


Then I removed wine completely

apt-get --purge remove wine

Then I commented out the sourceforge repositories in my sources.list as sourceforge holds old versions of wine.

Then I installed the latest deb package from debian official repositories, and

francesco@deb32:~$ wine --version
Invoking /usr/lib/wine/wine.bin --version ...
wine-0.9.59-1

The situation as I described before for the two packages to run with wine was unchanged.


If not, upgrade to new version of Wine

(60, 61 or RC1).
