anyway i decided to reinstall it all, and theres some good news, wmp9 doesn't crash anymore but it does give an error and it continues to look like it's playing the song but there's no sound and such.

wont let me run in a terminal either

Code: Select all

graafschap@graafschap-desktop:~$ wine start 'c:/Program Files/Windows Media Player/wmplayer.exe'
fixme:exec:SHELL_execute flags ignored: 0x00000100

I see it has no extension... wierd... why does it do that?
Linux does not rely on extensions to determine file type.

There's no crash in that log. What makes you think it crashed?

There's no need to reinstall your whole OS just to fix a problem with Wine. Reinstalling Wine alone usually won't help, either, because it doesn't remove ~/.wine, which is what usually needs to be done.

When you reinstalled your OS, did you also remember to install libmpg123? That's not part of the default install for most distros. Have you set up sound in winecfg? Does the sound test work?

First, make sure there are no zombie processes still running in the background before you start up WMP9.

Second, cd to the program directory before running it, and use only the program filename in the command:

Code: Select all

cd "$HOME/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Windows Media Player"
wine wmplayer.exe

It tells me it gets a serious problem, and then it either closes, or plays without sound. I do have libmpg. Reinstalling it in it's entirety helps me to keep it all organised, mind you, this is a college project. Sound in Wine works fine, because avi, wmv and wav do play just fine. Please excuse my newby-ness. Thanks again for helping.

This one does have a crash, and it's in libmpg123. Try using the native codec installed by WMP9 instead: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-8cfe86e ... df2da7490e

"Copy l3codeca.acm to the wineprefix's /windows/system32 directory (or use winetricks to install WMP9), then create a symlink to it named winemp3.acm in the same directory", this?

Yes. You already have WMP9 installed, so l3codeca.acm should already be there. Just create the symlink. If there's a file named winemp3.acm already in /system32, just rename it for now. It's a fake dll.

What do you mean by "won't let me run it"? What does it say in the terminal?

Also, one thing I forgot to add--after creating the symlink, set winemp3.acm to native in winecfg. The instructions in the FAQ are for cases where builtin doesn't exist, so Wine will then automatically look for native, but since you have a builtin winemp3.acm, you have to actively override it.

Thanks alot Dimesio, that fixed it!
I'll post a final list of what I did, as it may be useful to others and easy to find for myself when I need it:
* install Ubuntu, I used 9.10
* update it completely
* open the synaptic package manager -
and add ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa to the repository
* install Wine 1.2 from the synaptic package manager,
it'll automaticly get the latest version (I'm running 1.1.41 still)
* install MS Office 2007
* open winecfg and set winemp3.acm to native (& bulletin)
* install the K-Lite codec, Basic or Full, it makes little difference
* in the terminal, enter:

Code: Select all

wget http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
then

Code: Select all

sh winetricks wmp9
* have it install wmp9 and the required components

everything should work fine by now,
but I got crashes when using mp3's.

* open winecfg and remove msvcrt from the libraries list
* make a symlink called 'winemp3.acm' to 'l3codeca.acm' -
which is located in the system32 folder
* Open winecfg and set winemp3.acm to native (& bulletin)

Done!
mp3's and everything else works fine, aside from some frame-lag when playing wmv files.
the frame-lag on wmv files is no problem, but if you have any tips, they're welcome!

the wmv file: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xroikm
this is straight from a videoclip of Meshuggah (NMCC).

I'm glad you got it to work. However, it shouldn't be crashing when you use builtin winemp3.acm, and doesn't on my system. This suggests something is wrong with Ubuntu's Wine package and/or libmpg123. You should search Ubuntu Launchpad to see if a bug has already been filed, and if not, file one.

I got your video to work in WMP9 by converting it to an avi using mencoder, then running it through Avidemux to fix the sound (which didn't work at all in WMP9 in the file mencoder produced). My settings in Avidemux were Video: Copy; Audio: MP2(lavc); Format: AVI. There's probably a way to correct the sound in mencoder the first time around, but I'm not familiar enough with it to know the right command line option. This is pretty much the limit of my video encoding skills.

I know, avi works perfect. Thing is, this system will be made for computer-dummies to be able to easily present a powerpoint presentation. They will probably not know how to convert a video. Thank you.

So linking winemp3.acm to l3codeca.acm and entering it in winecfg fixes the mp3 issue. makes me curious if I could perhaps fix wmv the same way. What file is used to play/process wmv videos?

The video renderer is quartz.dll. That would be a straightforward override, but the last time I checked, native quartz crashed Wine.

It didn't crash, but it didn't fix the framelag either. That's okay though, I'm glad I got it 90% working. Any idea how I can open a powerpoint presentation on my USB stick from the terminal using MS Office (including manually mounting it) ?

Have you tried Impress, which is part of the Open Office suite? I've yet
to see a Powerpoint presentation that it can't display. OpenOffice has
been ported to OS X and Linux.

Yes, ofcourse, but what's the challenge in that? Also, it has some slight differences when viewing a presentation. Keep in mind that it'll have to be software-dummy-friendly, most people don't know anything about OO.
