Help Sound and vid now works in PP07?

Post by roderakker »

Hey guys!
I got some good and some bad news!

Good news first.
I got sound and video working in PowerPoint 2007, so I'm probably one of the first to do so, as I've been told it's impossible. Thumps up to my internship-teacher and Dimesio for this! Thanks.

so here's what I did:

* Install Ubuntu 9.10 & let it update
* Install Cabextract
* Install Wine 1.1.4
* Install Microsoft Office 2007
---* Set riched20 to native & bulletin in winecfg
* Install the K-Lite Basic Codec
* Install WMP9 using Winetricks

Code: Select all

sh winetricks wmp9
Tadaa! It works. I've tried WMA, MP3, WMV & AVI.

Now the bad news: The sound gets real buggy (cracking, popping) in MP3, the WMV video gets lag like crazy, and the AVI has problems playing sound (same problem as mp3). I was hoping you guys could help me out some more, as you've been of great help so far.[/code]

Is that a typo, or are you really using a version that's over a year old? (If so, why?)

Nope, it's not a typo. I believe this one was the one you recommended, but I could be mistaken. What version do you suggest I use instead?

The current development version, which is now 1.1.41 (was probably 1.1.40 when I recommended it.)

If it works in the old version, and not in current Wine, it's time for a regression test.

BTW, how did you manage to insert the videos into Powerpoint? I've always gotten an error message trying to do that in Wine.

The same way you'd do it in windows, it works fine. I think I downloaded this old version because I cannot find the .deb package anywhere. If you could link me, I will install the newest version, and report how it worked here. Thanks!

New packages should be in the Ubuntu repository. Ubuntu now calls the development releases wine1.2 for some reason.

Alright so now I did the exact same things I did in my starting post, but now I used the newest .41 version. Sound problems are gone, no cracking or popping, frame-lag on WMV's still remains. I have encountered a new problem: it crashes when it tries to play an MP3 file.
*install ubuntu 9.10
---*update it
*install wine 1.2 from synaptic
*add ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa in the repository
*upgrade wine up to the latest version as of 25mar2010
*install m$ office 07
---*add riched 20 in winecfg
*install wmp9 using winetricks
*install the k-lite basic codec pack

Maybe I've done it wrong, which I doubt, but I still get the same issue. :roll:

I'm afraid that's going to be a little too advanced for me, as I've only been working with Ubuntu for about 3 weeks now... :(

Can you upload the file somewhere and post a link? I'll see what it does on my system. If I can reproduce your results (both working in the old version, not working in the new), I can run the regression test.

BTW, regression testing really isn't hard, though admittedly the six single spaced pages of instructions can be intimidating.

I won't be able to upload the file as it's about 161mb, I could however upload the mp3. It also doesn't work in WMP9, which crashes and gives me this: http://i43.tinypic.com/z50du.png
Office 2007 tells me (in Dutch) that it has encuontered an error and had to close down, followed by some apologies and a link to report it.

here's the mp3: http://www.sendspace.com/file/xw6xgq

The file plays fine for me in WMP9, and even when inserted into a Powerpoint, so it's something on your system.

Two things come to mind. One is that winetricks wmp9 sets an override for msvcrt. I'm not sure why, because when I removed it after installing, WMP9 still worked fine (possibly it's needed for something I haven't tried). So if you still have that override set, remove it and see if that fixes the crash.

The second possibility has to do with libmpg123; there's a known problem with it on 64 bit Ubuntu. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=20042

If you've been using winemp3.acm (if you haven't actively changed that, you are), try the workaround described here: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-8cfe86e ... df2da7490e

Uhh... Why not just use killall pulseaudio, in that case? Anyway, that won't work as pulse just resurrects when you start any new app requesting audio.

There exists an ALSA pulse plugin needed to make ALSA apps (wine) play nicely with pulseaudio. It ought to be fixed by now. If not, the suggestion of killing pulseaudio is not far off... You probably want the 32 bit version of the plugin and a 32 bit ALSA lib on top of the 64 bit ones you may already have.

I've done all 3 of these, it has not worked. I'm running 32-bit Ubuntu.

Then try the various suggestions about PulseAudio. I don't have it installed on my system (openSUSE), and the sound file you uploaded works fine in WMP9 and Powerpoint.

I've tried it, but no luck so far... Pherhaps I should wait for .42? I don't know... Any other suggestions? Thank you for your time.

Run WMP9 from a terminal and try to play the mp3 that's crashing it. Post whatever messages appear. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_from_terminal

Sorry for the late reply, it was weekend :lol:
Anyway, the terminal output was a little long, so I put it on my webspace that I am using to store everything for my college project:
http://linuxdump.webs.com/Wmp9terminal01.htm
There's the output. Thankss.

Sorry for the double-post, I forgot that in HTML you have to use <br> after every line. Here's a link to the txt file:
http://linuxdump.webs.com/Wmp9Terminal01
I see it has no extension... wierd... why does it do that? Anyway, try to open it in gedit. Hope this will help us any further! Thanks again.

I did a fresh install of ubuntu 9.10 where I immediatly installed 1.1.41 instead of installing 1.1.31 and then updating to 1.1.41, still got the same problem... everything works fine except for mp3.. it just crashes when it tries to play mp3's..
