Can not open Excel password protected file
Can not open Excel password protected file
I have installed Win 1.1.42 on Ubuntu10.04 and installed Excel2007 as part of MS Office 2007. I can open a non-password protected .xlsx file without a problem.
However, when I try to open a password protected .xlsx file, I get an error message "The password you supplied is not correct. Verify that the CAPS LOCK key is off and be sure to use the correct capitalization."
I am certain that the caps lock key is off and I'm typing the correct password.
I am new to Wine. So, I don't know what info would be useful. I was surprised at the number of "fixme" and "err" lines that appeared when I first ran winecfg and when I installed MS Office 2007 (is this normal?)
Thanks to anyone who can lend a hand.

Re: Can not open Excel password protected file
You might try with a newer version of wine, the one you have is a few months old.meonline wrote:I have installed Win 1.1.42 on Ubuntu10.04 and installed Excel2007 as part of MS Office 2007. I can open a non-password protected .xlsx file without a problem.

See the download section on winehq.org for instructions to get a newer release.
Thanks
Thanks for the suggestion jeffz.
I'm distracted with another issue for a while. But I'll give that a try when I can get back to it and report back if it made a difference.
In the mean time, here's some other observations I've made:
- if I save the original .xlsx w/o a password, then open under wine and create a password, things work as expected
- I can open the original password protected .xlsx with OpenOffice
- I can open the original password protected .xlsx in a VirtualBox WinXP virtual machine
The above is FYI to any interested readers.

henriquefm,
I understand that I was not clear in what I meant by
Since I only run the VM to work with Office docs (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote), I'd prefer the wine approach. But, I have not had the opportunity to revisit this issue. Sorry I can't add clarity.

Unfortunately, I can not remember what I meant and have since uninstalled Wine in favor of resorting to running a VM under VirtualBox.things work as expected

Re: Can not open Excel password protected file
Got the same issue
I have 2 vitrtualbox environnemnts:
1.- Virtualbox 4.2.4 with Xubuntu 12.10 Wine 1.4.1 Office2007 Sp3
2.- Virtualbox 4.2.4 with windows 7 Office2007 Sp3
If I save and open the file in the same environnement, it works:
a) I open a non protected Excel file
b) set a password
c) save the file
d) re-open the file
e) enter the password
f) it works, I can open the file
Though, if I save the file in one environnement, and try to open it in the other, it doesn't work:
a) I open a non protected Excel file in environnement 1
b) I set a password in environnement 1
c) I save the file in environnement 1
d) I switch to environnement 2
e) I re-open the file in environnement 2
f) I enter the password in environnement 2
f) It does no work, I cannot open the file in environnement 2
It looks like the password coding is not the same in both environnements
My conclusion is also to stay on Virtualbox...
It's been 2 years that I dream to get rid of windows... and still am on it...
