Windows Software Install

Am just about to download my 1st linux os

, and have come across this site, My question is this can I install ANY windows software with Wine in linux ? i.e. dvd software / itunes / kaspersky anti virus etc ? and if so do I have to download the xp versions of all windows software ?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but am totally new to linux.

I'll be using eAR OS Free Edition with media player

In theory, yes. Many apps don't work yet, but check the AppDB to see
what does. iTunes should work well, but doesn't sync yet (if you're
brave, you can compile a version that does, the patches just aren't in
mainline wine yet). Kaspersky anti-virus...not sure why you'd want to
install that under wine...

Wine can act as any windows version, so you don't have to get the XP
version, but you may need to change the Windows version wine is acting
as in 'winecfg'.

None. Leave that for windows users. None of that stuff will work on Wine anyway. If you really want antivirus - use Linux program such as clamav for example.

The reason, by the way, is that a Windows antivirus intended to run on
Windows has to work at a very low level of the system, as low a level
as many viruses work at. This is a fiendishly difficult task, and is
really a silly way to do things IMO. And is why many antiviruses are
notorious for crippling Windows system performance and sucking up
power.

ClamAV is a separate Unix program for scanning files, and since it's
scanning for evil that doesn't run on the host operating system its
job is a lot simpler. (Most common use for ClamAV is on mail gateways,
to protect Windows machines receiving the mail from malware in the
mail.)

An AV can be useful to have on Wine, because Wine is
Windows-compatible enough to run many forms of Windows malware!

So:

* install ClamAV inside Linux itself
* set it to check your .wine directory regularly.

Adware checkers like Lavasoft AdAware are just file checkers and run
to some extent in Wine (the appDB entry needs updating):

None. If you don't run untrusted binaries, there is no reason to keep a virus
scanner around. Personal Firewalls are 100% pure, unmitigated snake oil and

DVDs are best played in their native environment, though you can check the
appdb for a particular DVD program you want to try.

Not necessary. Just don't run untrusted binaries in wine (though you really

You might find it easier to learn and get questions answered about a more
mainstream distribution unless one of your Linux using friends that you can
turn to suggested that distribution.

Caution may be advisable, however, given Wine's Windows compatibility
is sufficient to run quite a lot of Windows malware!

I understand Crossover special-case "outlook.exe" to protect against
exploits in it, for example.

Running ClamAV over your .wine folder regularly should be quite
sufficient in most cases. And ClamAV doesn't have the crippling
effects on Linux or Wine that Windows antiviruses do on Windows.

Hmm maybe you should put a smiley in such jokes. Otherwise people can't tell you were smiling. Even I as a reader of the thread got the impression you were piqued at what you thought was a stupid question that can readily be found in the FAQs. We just need to be more careful in written form.
