I broke WINE plz help.

Post by mrchaos101 »

I changed this week to Ubuntu from winows 7.

I spent the last few days trying to get World of Warcraft to run. After tossing lots of code at this and days on the net I was able to get it to work using PlayOnLlinux and WINE.

Today...I thought I would work on getting my MS Office 2010 to install and work. I hosed every thing. Had MSXML issues and sorm rtpd4.dll file I had to down load and over wright etc.

I want to HOSE all of my WINE and all of my PlayOnLinux and start from scratch as Im getting errors now.

I have no clue how to do this....this side short of a live cd going in my DVD drive and me TRULY starting from scratch.

Please HELP!

hopefully you understand that whether or not these commands will work for you depends on the flavor you're running. If you chose ubuntu then use

Code: Select all

sudo aptitude purge wine
to completely and entirely remove wine and all it's settings

Then you can use

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install wine
To reinstall it

Hopefully you will look closer and pay more attention to what you're doing when you shove a bunch of code into places most unwholesome.

I can also not think of a reason you would need both PlayOnLinux AND wine. It should work with one or the other.

PlayOnLinux is not supported here. You'll have to ask on their forum about how to remove it.

For plain Wine, just delete ~/.wine. It's rarely necessary to reinstall Wine itself, but you would do that the same way you installed in in the first place.

To experiment with trying to get an app to work, use a separate wineprefix so you don't mess up your existing apps.

Ok... guess I got it uninstalled. Tried to reinstall following the directions on this web site.

Just install your games into different prefixes like so:

Code: Select all

WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-game1 wine setup_game1.exe
....
WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-game2 wine setup_game2.exe
See FAQ for more info.
mrchaos101 wrote:ALSO. Can I have WINE runing Warcraft on one monitor and load up another WINE session on my other monitor to run 2 games at once?
Only if you using virtual desktop mode for both games.

Nothing to do with Wine. Ask your distro forum.
