Low FPS in Wine games
My computer was working fine up until a few days ago. The games I were playing were getting 60 FPS or more. Then suddenly I rebooted to find that the games are now getting < 10 FPS.
This happened a few times already, and somehow I've managed to make it go back to normal each time (last time I tweaked some nvidia-settings to fix it). I'm unable to get it to go back this time and also wondering why this happens. I have no idea whether its a Wine, Graphics Driver, or Linux error.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try reinstalling video drivers.valente500 wrote:My computer was working fine up until a few days ago. The games I were playing were getting 60 FPS or more. Then suddenly I rebooted to find that the games are now getting < 10 FPS.

although i'm fairly new to maintaining wine apps,
i read that low FPS is (almost) always related to in-game sound changes.
i'm not really sure how to alter many settings, but look at some of your sound settings in game and under your wine logs.
Apparently, many times when a game has low FPS in wine it's because the in-game music or sound effects are not loading completely right and can cause things like stutters.
hope this helps :)

@valente500:
Before starting a game, run nvidia-settings once. It will "initialize" the card with proper settings. I don't know why the driver from nvidia doesn't correctly "zap" the card at startup but the settings dialog does.
Also, on my computer, shutting down desktop composition made all the difference (all games ran at half speed with desktop composition on) - this in Kubuntu 10.04 with a 260GTX card.

I ran nvidia-settings, then closed the window that popped up, and then run a game, but nothing changed. Do I need to run them all in order in a script file?Loadus wrote: Before starting a game, run nvidia-settings once. It will "initialize" the card with proper settings. If by desktop composition you mean the compiz effects, I dont have them enabled.Loadus wrote: Also, on my computer, shutting down desktop composition made all the difference (all games ran at half speed with desktop composition on) - this in Kubuntu 10.04 with a 260GTX card.

Tried running "nvidia-settings --load-config-only" in a script along with wine'ing my game, and that still didn't fix the problem.
I also re-enabled dynamic twinview, since I disabled it to try and run KOTOR. That hasn't fixed my framerate either.
Also, I'm checking all my framerates in Counter Strike 1.6, which is generally considered a strong game under wine (the framerate issues also carry across to my other games aswell).
Does anyone have any other ideas? Perhaps its a hardware problem?

I've found out what the problem is. My laptops battery is stuffed up (not holding its charge or something). I took out the battery and the games are now back to normal. Probably might be time for me to get a new computer, as it is not worth replacing the battery. Might see if I can find some way to fix the battery.
Anyway, thank you all for your help!

I'm wondering if it's the battery that controls the CMOS? I'm not sure how to fix this. i just don't see how battery can affect the game play in Wine since I can use Ubuntu with no problems. I watch Youtube, surf the net with no problems, but the minute I start playing WoW in Wine the game starts playing in very low frame rates. This just started 2 days ago.
It could be an overheating problem. What video card do you have in that computer? Does this also happen with native (non-wine) games?asmodaous wrote:I am having the same problem except I have a desktop. When I unplug my computer for about 20 secs then WoW works fine for about 2-3 mins then I start to drop to about 5FPS. I normally get about 40FPS.
