ACD Labs 12.0 installs fine, runs fine for the first time
Hi there,
I am a relative Linux newbie and due to my work I use ACD Labs 12.0. This is a free for academia NMR processing software available only for windows. I am running it through a Virtual XP machine but I wanted to see if it would run using Wine.
The program installed fine, and when I started it for the first time everything was swell. At last I could run pretty much everything I need from Linux. I also did some data processing without it crashing, so I was quite happy. When I restarted the program, it started ok but it goes on the taskbar and there is no option to maximise the window. I uninstalled and installed again with the same results as described above. It would be great of anyone could give me a hand.
I am running Linux Mint 9 (Isadora) and my Wine version is Wine 1.2 (today the latest winetricks package was installed as well). Kernel version is 2.6.32-21-generic.

hmmm..... Have you tried running wine as a virtual desktop??Hi there,

Have you tried the other options of unchecking - "allow window managerI have, and it does absolutely nothing. I have a nice blue screen (like the normal WindowsXP) and that's it...nothing else
decorate/control windows"?

Tried them and this is what happens:
1.Unchecking both of them, the program starts but the window does not show up eventhough the ACDHost which appears at the task bar says they are loaded.
2.Unticking th decorate and leaving the other has the effect of not being able to maximise the window (ad described in the original post)
3.Unticking the control windows and allowing the decoration has the effect of one.

hey Nikos,
Yes, i am aware they are both ticked off. Unfortunately, i do not
have a solution for you, as i do not own this software.
I had thought it was a possibility that either the virtual desktop or
the other window parameters might
have an effect. (you also tried your combinations with/without the
virtual desktop enabled, right?).
I wouldn't think that a specific windows app, would handle maximizing
a window differently, so it is interesting
that it won't work for you. I've never had this type of issue, and i
use wine a lot...weird.
if it were me, i would even poke around the registry, see what your
software has listed in there. Maybe, there is something that will
stick out to you. I once had an app not start properly (it would start
and then close), i went through
the registry, a setting caught my eye, i played around a little, and
now the app works.
wine can be a strange beast!
sorry i do not have anymore advice, have you googled around to see if
anyone else is using ACD labs in wine??? or checked the WineHQ appdb,
to see if it in fact works??? maybe in the manufacturers forums ( if
they got them ), there might be someone in there with a clue...?

I have googled it around and one of the pages is of the program vendors showing that it work in Wine. The really strange bit is that the first time you fire it up immediatelly after installation it works fine. If you close and restart the program it starts but the window gets minimised at the taskbar and there is no way of bringing it up.
The other strange bit is that it does not put a shortcut in the wine directory so everytime you have to doubleclick the executable file...it also puts the shortcuts at \.wine\drive_c\users\nikos\Temp\ACDLabs while the whole thing is installed at \.wine\drive_c\users\Program Files
I will do a more extensive google search and I will let you know...
As I said it worked the first time around, and I processed some data as well, so I am a bit at a loss.
I will give it a go with Vbox turned off to see if that makes any difference. I don't know much about registry poking around but I will try and have a look.
I will let you know.

Are you sure the program exited completely? Check to make sure no processes are left running.nikos wrote:I have googled it around and one of the pages is of the program vendors showing that it work in Wine. Is this the page you're talking about? http://www.acdlabs.com/download/nikos wrote:I have googled it around and one of the pages is of the program vendors showing that it work in Wine.
If so, note that the date on the "Linux" version that they say uses Wine is 2006-05-24. That's extremely old. I wouldn't expect it to work in current Wine.
And if the app you're trying to run is actually ChemSketch 12, the problem is a known bug. There's a workaround in the bug report. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12001
I am not so interested in ChemSketch, eventhough it seems to be running ok, I have not tried to use it yet. Unfortunately it seems to be loading together with the NMR processor and may this is what causes all the grief.
P.S.> This is the page I have seen, I know that it is quite old and that the version of Wine get some stuff right and others that would run upon upgrade will not run anymore. I will have a look and will let you know
