Font issue in Half-Life 2 via Wine 1.3.0

Post by r2rX »

Greetz guys,

I have recently installed Wine 1.3.0, with winetricks (31/7/2010), and installed all the fonts available (via winetricks allfonts).

Everything downloaded and "installed" fine.

Now, I was playing Half-Life 2 on Wine 1.2 and it was working perfectly. I've installed Wine 1.3.0 and continued my game. But now, the fonts are messed (there are random letters missing from text).

I've completely purged Wine and reinstalled Wine 1.3.0, installing all the fonts again, but the game is still displaying missing letters. I'm yet to try Wine 1.2 again, but has anyone else noticed this issue?

Cheers.

Have you updated graphics drivers in the meantime? If not, this is probably a regression in Wine and you should report a bug on bugs.winehq.org.

I am already on the latest Catalyst drivers (10.7). This issue started transitioning from Wine 1.2 to 1.3.

I've installed the entire suite of the Half-Life 2 series (2, Ep1, Ep2 and Lost Coast).

After some testing, when I start any of them for the first time, the fonts are fine. The moment I change a single graphic option (regardless of which one it is; whether it's model detail, texture detail, resolution etc) the fonts mess up.

But when running the game, sometimes the in-game subtitle fonts are absolutely fine...then they aren't. Same with the menu text/fonts....one time it's fine, then at another point it isn't.

It's really strange.

I'll take a look and see if I should post this bug.

Can you run a regression test for this? There were approximately 700
commits between the release of Wine 1.2 and Wine 1.3.0.

Unfortunately, I cannot get my hands on HalfLife2 or any of the addons
for testing purposes (I'm really not interested in playing the game,
just fixing this problem.)

Thanks James.

What is the procedure for running a regression test? Also, i'm replacing my ATi card with an nV card so I can test new games/review older ones that haven't been updated, in the App DB, for a while. :)

Thanks Aaron,

It no longer seems ot be an issue with Wine v1.3...I'm reporting that I am getting the exact same issue with Wine v1.2 as well....the only constant is the Catalyst 10.7 driver.

So i'm gonna install the 10.5's and see if it helps. I'll reinstall Wine v1.3 and check it out....cause i've noticed that there is a speed improvement (at least noticed in Source engine-based games) in 1.3 over 1.2.

I would be interested in the results. If it does show a regression in
the ATI drivers maybe one of us could raise a bug report with ATI.

Damn. I've been updated to the latest kernel and removed the prior ones. Now, Cat 10.5 + 10.6 don't initialize properly....only the 10.7's work. Honestly, this is not worth the pain in the ass due to ATi.

Aaron, how've you been testing the prior drivers?

I am unsure what distribution of Linux you are running, so take these
instructions with a truck of salt:

1. Un-install the current driver and reboot machine.
2. Assuming that you have already downloaded the 10.5 drivers. Open a
terminal and cd to where its saved.
3. Assuming that you are running Ubuntu 10.04, run the following commands:
sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-10-5-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg
Ubuntu/lucid
sudo dpkg -i *.deb
sudo aticonfig --initial --force
4. Reboot machine.

ATI 10.5 (Wine 1.2) = No issue
ATI 10.6 (Wine 1.2) = Missing text
ATI 10.7 (Wine 1.2) = Missing text

Thanks Aaron. I made the .deb but my conflict was still there. There seemed to be some remnants of prior drivers which were causing conflicts. Once those were sorted, the drivers initialized just fine.

And to confirm, it's definitely the Catalyst drivers. Using the 10.5's show no errors at all. All fonts and textures are displayed perfectly.

I won't bother testing the 10.6's....the results will most likely confirm your findings, Aaron.

Oh well...I will be rid of these issues in a week or so, when I get a GTX 480. Thanks for all the help, guys. ;)

Instead of being an insensitive ass, I have added a comment on Aaron's bug report, as well as confirming that the 10.6's also do not work. This bug stems from 10.6 onwards.

Thanks Aaron; and apologies James.

No problem. I have two ATI cards here and neither can be 'removed' as
they are in laptops. The first is an ATI Rage Mobility in an older
Thinkpad and the other is in my MacBookPro. So, I do have concerns
about the Catalyst drivers and their apparent lack of functionality and
how they can mess up Wine.

I'll go visit Aaron's bug report and see if there is any progress.
AMD/ATI should be adding onto and not removing code (unless it breaks
new code) for their older video cards. They have to remember not
everyone is a gamer nor does everyone want or need the latest/greatest
video card.

I'm wondering if a driver problem might be affecting World of Warcraft.
Does anyone with problems using Catalyst 10.7 with WoW can confirm that
this downgrade of drivers corrects problems with this game?

Thank you.

Steam has a "gift" feature if you'd like to post your steam account
email address and hope for the best. When Orange Box was released, many
people gave away their original copies of Half Life 2 and Episode 1 (and
I think they may still be able to).

I have the same issue with Catalyst 10.7 and wine 1.3.0.

Fonts messed up and low performance in-game. I hope someone gets that fixed, I'd love to play in linux :P

This is an issue with ATi. If you want to try and help, go to the thread that Aaron created on the ATi bug site:

http://ati.cchtml.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1876

Comment on this thread.....if enough people do, ATi might consider fixing it.

Can you try backleveling to Catalyst 10.5 as someone else did in this
thread and see if the problem 'goes away'?

This definitely looks like an ATI video driver issue.
