Problem since Wine 1.2-rc1

Post by a0hof »

Hi!
Wine is completely not working for me since the release of the 1.2-versions.
Any try to start an app with wine or running one o wine's apps itself (winecfg etc) results in a freeze of wine.

This is whatthe console delivers me for winecfg:

For any app I try to launch the output begins with "*** glibc detected *** ANYAPP.exe: free(): invalid next size (fast): SOMENUMBERS ***

and after this a loong list of some libs (see above) ending with: "Assertion failed at address 0xffffe425 (thread SOMENUMBER), starting debugger..."
while "address 0xffffe425" seems to be always the same.

I really enjoyed wine so far and I was happy when i heard that 1.2 was finished, but since 1.2-rc1 that problem occurs and I can't find a solution myself this time. I'm now running wine 1.2 on Sabayon Linux (Gentoo-based distro), I tried the precompiled binary of the sabayon-overlay and self-emerged from the gentoo-tree, both behave equal.

Try renaming/deleting ~/.wine (You will need to reinstall everything...)

I already tried that, unfortunatly changed nothing. When running winecfg after that, the directory and everything (dosdevices, drive_c, system.reg, user.reg, uderdef.reg) will be created, but the terminal shows the same errors and wine freezes.

Some other usefull information: I've got a pure wine installation, no changes to the completely new created .wine directory since the update to 1.2 are made.
Same problem occured since 1.2-rc1.
After wine freezed, wine-processes have to be manually killed, they don't stop after closing the terminal etc.
If I forgot some information and you need more, I#ll provide them as soon as I can.
Hope someone can find a solution, I miss wine^^

I'm using 2.6.34.
I could try wine using 2.6.33, maybe my problems are not related to wine 1.2 but to kernel 2.6.34 and both were installed in a similar time interval^^.
I'll report back in a minute...

Thanks so far to both repliers and all others people ;)

Sorry for these double-postings.
Unfortunatly I'm not able to produce a graphical interface with 2.6.33, but I tried winecfg in the command line though and reported no error except that there was no display on X server :D I don't know whether that means that my problem doesn't exist with 2.6.33 or that wine simply doesn't load far enough to produce errors when it cannot draw a window because of missing display on X server...

Wine requires that X be running. Even if the program is not graphical.
This is in the Wine FAQ as well.
:D
Is this a smiley face?

Your problem does not exist with Kernel 2.6.33 according to what you
have posted so far.

There is supposed to be a kernel that Wine does not work well with.
Since I'm on a Mac and I cannot get Linux to run correctly on my
Thinkpad, I cannot confirm this.

- Ok sorry, I probably should have taken a closer look to the FAQ, but I simply thought that the mentioned error occurs far before trying to draw some window to X, or am I completely wrong here?

- Yes, that was a Smiley.

- Thank you very much so far, now I've got a closer idea how that problem probably could get solved again :)

If it's no trouble for you: what exactly makes you think that the problem is related to the kernel?

If you open the command line program in Windows, it opens a window.
Wine attempts to emulate this behavior. This is why we recommend using
DOSBOX for any DOS like program. Unless your program specifically uses
Windows calls, this may be the way to go for your problem.

There have been multiple reports of difficulties with this kernel here
in the forums/mailing list.
