Hardwood Solitaire and Wine 1.2-rc7

Post by Bob Benjamin »

I'm a Linux newbie. I have Hardwood Solitaire installed with Ubuntu
10.4 and wine 1.2-rc7. The file is a .exe and it starts to open and
stops saying it has a serious error and needs to close. The file is OK
in windows and I need help to find out why it wont work here. Please
remember I'm a newbie and any help needs to be basic. Thanks. The file
is hwsoliii.exe Bob

Also, can videochat programs like iSpQ 9.0 run from wine. How is
that done. Thanks again.

First, you might update to wine-1.2.
When it's done, check in the wine FAQ how to get a debugging log (you
might want to read the other sections as well, shouldn't hurt)

For specific applications, you can check the AppDB

Thanks. Have wine 1.2-rc7. Is that the same as 1.2.
No, it's the previous version.
And I will check the
debugging log. Hope taht works without too mcuh knowledge of Linux (Ubuntu)
Is Fedora fc 13 and better? Would it work there?
No idea.
What distribution are you using? what video card? driver?
Will let you know how I
make out with the debuggin log. Thanks.

Ok. Will try and get the 1.2 version. Have 2 HDs one with Ubuntu 10.4 and
the other with Fedora fc 13. And a 3rd HD with XP Pro which I'm trying to
get away from. The HDs are removable so each OS is on it's own drive. No
dual booting. Have an ATI 9550 video card and latest driver. Not sure what
it is. Have a 1.2 GHz Intel processor and 2.0 Gigs of RAM. Thanks again.

If your MUA offers 'Reply to List', use it. That's even better because
the person you're replying to only gets one copy of your reply.

Have wine 1.2 and still have the same problem with hwsoliii.exe which is that when it tries to install, it gives a message that there is a serious problem and has to be shut down. Tried to get a debugging log but I guess being a newbie, I don't understand that nor where to get it and how to use it. Will keep trying with your help til the program installs. The same problem exists with Fedora fc 13 and Ubuntu 10.4. Can send a screenshot of the error message if needed. Thanks for the help. Bob

The process for running a program in the terminal is here:

http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#run_from_terminal

and to get a logging file:

http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

Once you get a log file, please post it to a site like pastebin.com and then please post only the corresponding URL here.

Thanks. Neither of the sites will load right now so I'll try
again later. Bob
You are correct. It appears that the Wiki is not reponding right now.

I posted the output from the logfile in pastebin and clicked submit.
Not sure what happened but it is very short, so I'll attach it here to
be sure you get it. Thanks. Bob

[benjie1@localhost ~]$ su -
Password:
[root@localhost ~]# cd /home/benjie1
[root@localhost benjie1]# cd .wine
First, do NOT run Wine as ROOT. It can mess things up, terribly.
Second, you need to change directories to where the hwsoliii.exe file exists and run it from there.
[root@localhost .wine]# wine hwsoliii.exe
wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\hwsoliii.exe"
[root@localhost .wine]#
You will have to delete your .wine directory as root and start over again creating the Wine folders as your user.
