Problem running any games with Steam

Post by ahakala »

When ever I try to run FEAR 2 or Half-Life in Steam the "Preparing to launch" window comes up and then disappears. I assume every game I have will do this same thing, but it takes way to long to install anything in Steam.

Both games produce the following output in the terminal:

Code: Select all

err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7edf8574
err:ole:RevokeDragDrop invalid hwnd (nil)
err:ole:RevokeDragDrop invalid hwnd 0x30114
I am using Wine v1.1.43, I have the most up to date Nvidia drivers, and have tried reinstalling them twice. I have also tried reinstalling Wine, Steam, FEAR 2 and Half-Life, but I still get the exact same errors.

Thank you in advance for any help.

System Specs:
OS: Gentoo(amd64)
CPU: AMD64 X2 6000+
RAM: 2GB
Video Card: Nvidia 8800GT 512MB

I haven't tried to that. Do i need to uninstall my current version of wine before installing the new one, or will it update the right files when I build it?[/code]

I reinstalled mine to be sure but you can try just running the update first , then go to configure wine and under about you'll see the version , the latest is 1.2 rc

I am able to run Eversion and AudioSurf, so no, actually. Though I can't tell what the problem really is - and if it's local. Try (re)moving ~/.wine, then reinstall Steam and reddownload your game to see if it works with plain Wine at least.

I'm not saying everyone has this problem, I am saying I can't run any games on Steam. I have tried reinstalling everything. I removed every trace of Wine from the computer and reinstalled it. I have all ready reinstalled Steam three times, and both games twice. I am currently trying to download some more games to test, but it is fairly slow unfortunately.

Not sure what steam games you have tried but see if peggle extreme works. It is a free steam download. The link is in the steam forum as a sticky titled free steam games. It is also a fairly small download.

Peggle Extreme gives the exact same errors as Half-Life and FEAR 2. I am downloading Portal right now, all though I am sure it will do the same thing.

Turn off the in-game community features (Steam -> Settings -> In Game). Had the same problem as you and this worked like a charm

Thank you, this solved it. Funny how it ends up being something so simple after reinstalling everything so many times.

Of course one problem gets fixed and another one gets presented. At least it's only FEAR 2 that is broken now, after it launches and plays the WB Games and Monolith videos I get greeted by a wonderful black screen. :?

The errors are now:

Code: Select all

err:d3d_surface:surface_set_texture_name Surface has SFLAG_INTEXTURE set, but no texture name
err:d3d_surface:IWineD3DSurfaceImpl_ModifyLocation 0x50c8e418: Surface does not have any up to date location
This just gets repeated over and over again until I kill the process.

It will probably be easier to search the forums and google for the solution to this, but I figured I see if anyone thats helped so far knows how to resolve it.

Maybe related to the a bug as described in bug report 22983 which
applies to a different Steam game.

It's not a bug with wine from what I have found. It is an issue with the game since the majority of people that have this problem are using Windows. Still haven't had any luck finding a solution that works though. :?
