Lotus Notes 7.03 crash when changing workspaces

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with five workspaces set up in GNOME. I assume
it's using compiz (I didn't tell it not to), which I know can interact
problematically with Wine.
I use Notes 7.03 for Windows quite happily in Wine at work. (I know
there's a Linux client, but the installer seems very hard to get hold
of casually.) As long as I use only one workspace. If I open it in one
workspace and change to another, it's likely to crash. Or if I start
it in one and try to move it to another.
Wine is 1.1.42 out of the Karmic wine-1.2 package, just updated today.
This does *not* affect other programs running in Wine, e.g. Firefox win32.
Any ideas on how I can better track down what's crashing where? Has
anyone else seen this?
FWIW, this is still happening occasionally with the current 1.2rc3 -
but a lot less often! OTOH, this is on a different machine which will
therefore have a different video card ... still under Ubuntu 10.04.

I've seen this, but only with one particular program and only when two
copies of it were running in the same Wine prefix.

I have no idea why the program in question was affected except that it
is a very old Win95, or even Win 3.11, program that seems to be written
in VB 3. I run other programs that don't have this problem.

In 1.2-RC4, a new weirdness has come about: Lotus Notes changes
workspace from time to time!

I would *guess* a weird interaction between Notes, Wine, GNOME, Compiz
and the video driver ... and I'm now wondering if, when it crashed,
Compiz was actually trying to move it to another workspace ...

Computers, eh? ;-)

This is why the Wine community recommends turning off Compiz. It is a wonderful interface, but has its 'quirks'....

Indeed. Notes stress-tests Wine, Wine stress-tests Compiz, Compiz
stress-tests the video driver and the driver stress-tests X ... it's
just the way to get the really *interesting* bugs to show themselves

Anything you can remove helps. Try this with Compiz turned off and see if the bug goes away. If so, the bug is in Compiz. If not, then the bug is either in Wine, X or your video drivers.
