Can't start UT3

Post by LutraMan »

I really need help, I tried installing several times already and I'm getting the same problem no matter what I do.
I install the game and everything seems to go well during install. After installation I try to start the game and it gets stuck to the splash screen.
I looked in Google and found that this problem is not related to Linux or Wine, some other people have been experiencing the same problem on a windows machine, and all they had to do to fix it is reinstall the sound driver.

The Wine sound test checks out. Also, I tried installing the Realtek sound card driver for Linux with no results.

When I try to start the game 'htop' shows UT3 process running. It goes until it's memory is at 13.5% and then 1 of the processors goes to 0 and the other one stays on 100. It doesn't stop until I kill it.

Here is the Terminal output:

Code: Select all

tom@tom-desktop:~$ /usr/share/playonlinux/playonlinux --run "Unreal Tournament 3"
PlayOnLinux v3.7.2

Checking python : [ Ok ]
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
bt_audio_service_open: connect() failed: Connection refused (111)
AL lib: alAuxEffectSlot.c:507: alcDestroyContext(): deleting 4 AuxiliaryEffectSlot(s)
1 more thing worth mentioning. I've recently replaced my OS from Ubuntu 8.04 to 9.10, and since then Wine has not been itself. a lot of things that should work smoothly don't work (I also tried to install office, and it gives me error when I try to start Word.)

If any other info is necessary I'll be happy to provide it.

tnx[/code]

PlayOnLinux is not supported here. Ask on their forum.

not playonlinux

Post by LutraMan »

I've installed on play on linux because I got the same problem when I installed without it.
It's not related to play on linux.
I also have an installation on a wine prefix out of playonlinux if you prefer details from there.

plz help, I've been on this issue for 2 weeks now.

Then install it with plain Wine (latest version preferred) and post terminal output.

here is the output from the plain wine.
there is more to it, but the bt problem seems to be the cause in both cases.

Post by LutraMan »

still playonlinux, It placed a launcher on the plain wine, so I thought that was it.
I'm reinstalling UT3 on plain wine now, and I'll post the output here soon.

Have you stopped all sound servers? What version of OpenAL do you have installed on your system? Is it properly configured?

PlayOnLinux doesn't support UT3 because fps is too slow. I wrote script which installs UT3 on PlayOnLinux though. The script is unofficial and is somewhere on POL's forums.

openal-soft (1:1.8.466-2)

and about stopping sound servers, how do I do that? and how do I know if openAl is properly configured?

BTW - sorry for the long time it took me to replay, I'm barley at home.

This is a problem with ubuntu sound trying to use bluetooth even though
it's disabled. Remember seeing it on mu parents machine which was
blocking audacity from working and causing it to crash.

See comment 8 in the following bug
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/379041

No idea if this will allow UT3 to run, but you should fix this before
attempting to start it with wine.

1 suggested solution is to run the following in a terminal window:
sudo apt-get purge bluez-alsa

If you don't have a bluetooth device that uses sound connected to your
system, then that should be sufficient.

this one is fixed, but...

Post by LutraMan »

I purged the bluez-alsa
The bt error disappeared from the error, but still UT3 does not run, symptoms are the same. It's getting to 13.5% memory and then stops one of the processors and stays that way until I kill it.
This is the what I get when I try to run it now:

In winecfg audio tab try setting hardware emulation to "emulation".

Set it to native, make sure Wine is not running (wineserver -k) and start your game. Post new terminal output.

You still using the wrong dll. Have you installed the openal redist from creative? Is there an openal32.dll in the game's directory?
