First crack at this! Could use advice on a few questions...

Post by Phreakwenci »

Hi All, I'm J.D.

I'm trying to use wine to run a program called Bit Che. it runs to a certain point and then just freezes... sorta.

The program is a windows torrent search app, that searches all the major torrent sites at once for whatever "LEGAL" torrents I'm looking for.

So I tried running it with winehelper first... and it froze once I asked it to search, then I tried from terminal and it froze that way too, so I need to troubleshoot to figure out what is causing it to freeze and how to fix it.

I've attached my log from terminal and winehelper as well to see what can be done, thanks!

you can download it at http://convivea.com/download.php?id=2 that's the actual website for it.

I'm not sure I'll try the winetrix tip and post back!

Hmm, that's some Darwine stuff going on. The error shows you're not
calling wine correctly (either an old version, or the wrong path,
etc.).

http://mike.kronenberg.org/?p=69 may help?

Phreakwenci:

Please do the following:

Open the Applications folder
Open the Utilities folder
Start the Terminal program
Expand it to the point where the top bar states 200x24 (or something
similar)
Type in ps -ef | grep winehelper
This will give you a line of information you are interested in the
second number
type in kill -term <second number from above>

I don't know which version of Wine for MacOSX you are using and this is
the quickest method to stop winehelper.

Start the Wine process again. You should NOT get this error message.
If you are please advise of the following:

Version of MacOSX you are using.
The processor type from about this mac

The version of Wine for MacOSX you are using, and where you obtained it
(Zach Drayer, Mike Kronenberg, MacPorts, Fink, etc.)

The error you received above is a version mismatch between Winehelper
and the attempted version of wine you are running.

Austin:

WineHelper version mismatch. I get this when I am running Wine for
MacOSX and upgrade with the winehelper process running. I've done this
a few times to myself. :)

Not fun, but easy to fix.

How did you install Wine for MacOSX? I did ask this before and it
appears that you did not have winehelper running. Instead try the
following from the terminal:

ps -ef | grep wineserver | egrep -v grep

I installed it using guides I found online here:
http://davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/

I tried the terminal command you gave me and it didn't do anything. Just gave me a command line for my next command. No error message nada...

here's what it said:
Rampant-Lion-3:~ Jan$ ps -ef | grep wineserver | egrep -v grep
Rampant-Lion-3:~ Jan$

Should I try to completely remove it, and then install again? and if so how do I do that?

Looks like MacPorts Wine port is broken. Please report your problems there.

FWIW, I have tried both Zach Drayer's and Mike Kronenberg's ports. I
have found one issue with Zach's port and I should have addressed it to him.

And if so how do I completly uninstall wine and reinstall it so that it works better, I know how to uninstall macports, but I'm just not sure of the order of the uninstall and and if there's a better guide on how to install wine then what I followed.

sudo port uninstall wine (should work and be the first thing you do.)

Uninstall other programs installed using MacPorts

Uninstall MacPorts

The guide you followed is a good one for Wine installation if you want
to brew your own. Be aware that OpenGL remains broken on the Mac
because of the Apple implementation. XQuartz has released 2.3.3, which
fixes most of the problems, but that requires Leopard 10.5.7, which has
not been released yet.

The guide you followed is a good one for Wine installation if you want
to brew your own. Be aware that OpenGL remains broken on the Mac
because of the Apple implementation. XQuartz has released 2.3.3,
which
fixes most of the problems, but that requires Leopard 10.5.7, which
has
not been released yet.
10.5.7 was finally released today! Haven't had time to touch it (or
Xquartz or Wine or ...) but hopefully I'll have some time in the near
future.

Ok, well, I've uninstalled everything that is wine and macports I think... (may the flying spaghetti monster help me..) So I'll update to 10.5.7 and then try to reinstall... is there a better/easier way to install wine?

How about breaking anything to do with this release into a new thread?
I'm certainly interested in successes with XQuartz 2.3.3.
