wow memory error

Post by Jim Hall »

Debian Lenny
Wine 1.0.1 from Lenny repository
Intel Dual Core
2GB RAM
250 GB SATA HD
Nvidia 9600 GT

When start WOW from system application menu I get the following error after
I click on "Play" button on the WOW launcher.

The application has encountered a critical error:

Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0073:7D9F80E4

The instruction at "0073:7D9F80E4" referenced memory at "0x00000000".
The memory could not be "read".

Press OK to terminate the application.

Everything about the comp is brand new, so I don't want to assume anything.
Any direction/advice is appreciated.

OK. Can I just add the Winehq repository to Apt (Synaptic) and install over
what I have now, or should I remove what I have first?

I have similar problem, but memory "could not be written"

Code: Select all

Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe

The instruction at "0x0061CD07" referenced memory at "0xFF999E04".

Septa, that "memory could not be written" error happens in Windows as well, but normally only when something is failing. When my old 5700LE started failing due to a bad batch of capacitors being used on it, I'd get that error randomly, and eventually it happened every time that I tried to play. Upon sending the card in and having it repaired for free, it stopped that error. Does WoW do that to you in Windows, or just Wine?

Reinstall your video drivers (use the nvidia installer). Sometimes after a wine update wow has troubles starting up like that; this fixes it (at least for me).

Ubuntu 8.04
Integrated ATI card.

This application has encountered a critical error:

ERROR #132 (0x85100084) Fatal Exception
Program: C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Wow.exe
Exception: 0xC0000005 (ACCESS_VIOLATION) at 0073:7E8902A5

The instruction at "0x7E8902A5" referenced memory at "0x00000024".
The memory could not be "read".

Press OK to terminate the application.

I installed the Wine beta Version 1.1.19 from the repo before installing WoW.

wow memory error

Post by jerlinux »

Sorry to butt in but can you send me a little insight on using the
nvidia installer? I think that this box has the wrong drivers
installed.

Thanks

Thank you. Did that, Worked fine. Back to "winecfg" in terminal (I think
that's the Debian menu system). Program menu's still there. Error msg gone.
Downloaded patch update. New error msg, with a WOW title on the msg box.
"Failed to find a suitable display device. Exiting program."

OpenGL is set in the wtf. My original WOW install still runs (other, very
slow comp).

You need to ask that on your distro's support forum, or the nVidia forum. It is not a Wine question.

Go to nVidia's site and download the nVidia installer. You select the right one the same way you do for Windows drivers. If you're running 64bit Linux, you will need t select "Linux x64". If not, just select "Linux". Once you have the file, you need to exit from KDE/Gnome/whatever and get to a normal login (alt+n at the login screen). Login as root, move the installer to the root directory, and run it. Normally you run it by using "sh ./NVIDIA-Linux-blahblahblah.pkg". Note that you need your Linux headers and building tools installed to do this.

Once it builds and installs, reboot and enjoy.

It sure does sound like you're using the open source nv driver. World of Warcraft requires the proprietary nVidia drivers, at least 178.24 for your card.

see this page for card and driver compatibility.

You may prefer the Debian Way for installing drivers. See also this howto. Debian is up to 177.80 in the Lenny and testing repos. Debian Sid is at 180.20 if I am not mistaken.

My problem was solved by the advice to reinstall the driver. However, I
took the opportunity to upgrade to the newest version (180.51). Now it
works. Thanks.
