Im running ubuntu 8.10 on an older computer but im not getting any words when i try to install something or go to wine config; i do see all the buttons, etc. but no words on them...help plz!
note: i do see words once i set desktop effects to none however it appears to be crossed out or striked through

Do you happen to be using the nVidia legacy driver? What you describe is a known bug with the driver.
