Can't install IE6

Post by awdoyle »

Using wine 0.9.58 on Ubuntu 8.04
Like an idiot, I tried to install IE7 before doing the research to find that IE6 was more ideal with far fewer problems. So after attempting to install IE7 and failing, I tried to install IE6, but in the terminal I get this response after typing wine ie6setup.exe:

Warning: the specified System directory L"C:\\windows\\system32" is not accessible.
wine: could not load L"C:\\windows\\system32\\ie6setup.exe": Module not found
andrew@andrew-desktop:~$ Warning: the specified System directory L"C:\\windows\\system32" is not accessible.

I often (but not always) get an additional pop up box telling me that the install failed because IE7 is already installed. I've tried removing the dir, uninstalling/re-installing wine, and googling the errors, but so far it's a wash. Any suggestion you can offer is very much appreciated :?

Run this:

mv ~/.wine{,.backup}
wineprefixcreate

Then you will have clean WINE prefix.

However, personally I do not recommend to install IE in default WINE prefix.
To use another WINE prefix you need to run this:

export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine.ie6
wineprefixcreate

Then you can run wine to install IE or anything you want in this WINE prefix.
Just remember to set proper WINEPREFIX environment value to actually use it.
Of course you can create launch icons on your desktop, aliases, etc. with
this WINEPREFIX in order to run Windows programs (installed within it)
quickly, without typing each time command in a terminal to export WINEPREFIX.

Why are you trying to install IE6? If for testing web pages/etc, try
using ies4linux. It is not supported by wine, so don't use it for
other apps, but when you have to have real IE, it takes a lot of the
work/trouble out.

Sorry for the delayed response. Ubuntu's updates caused my comp to fail booting (twice), but Kubuntu seems to be working alright. On the upside, the new install of WINE is unspoiled by IE7.

L. Rahyen: Thank you for the helpful reply. I'm still treading water with the command line and WINE though, so I have a couple questions. After running:

export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine.ie6
wineprefixcreate

in the terminal, what is the best way to run ie6setup.exe so that it puts the IE6 files into the .wine.ie6 prefix. Just cd to the directory and run "wine ie6setup.exe" while there?

austin987: Actually I'm not testing IE or even tied to the browser - it's the way Outlook Express "syncs" with hotmail accounts and deletes mail online when you delete it in the inbox. Other mail clients just don't seem to offer that, and OE only comes with IE.

Thank you again for the helpful replies.

Hmm, odd. The error is the same.
On a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04, WINE v 0.9.58, amd64 system. After I create a separate WINEPREFIX, cd into the directory, and run 'wine ie6setup.exe', it returns this feedback in the terminal:

fixme:advapi:CheckTokenMembership ((nil) 0x125408 0x33fd78) stub!
fixme:advapi:DecryptFileA "C:\\windows\\temp\\IXP000.TMP\\" 00000000
fixme:cursor:CURSORICON_LoadFromFile No support for .ani cursors.
fixme:advpack:set_ldids Need to support changing paths - default will be used
fixme:advpack:set_ldids Need to support changing paths - default will be used
fixme:advpack:NeedReboot (0): stub

Then I get a popup labeled Windows Update Setup, saying:

Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system.
Setup cannot continue.

I don't have a clue what the fixme script is referring to, but the popup is wierd. I dual boot with winxp. Do you think it's referring to my existing IE7 files on the windows side? That wouldn't make sense.. .

Wine is not really meant to run internet explorer, but you may find this useful:

Really strange... I suggest to upgrade to 0.9.59 and try again like this:

rm -r ~/.wine-ie6

Make sure that this command don't give you any errors and that ~/.wine-ie6
was really deleted. Then:

export WINEPREFIX=~/.wine-ie6
wineprefixcreate

Here ~/.wine-ie6 should be created... And then (in same shell where you
exported path to ~/.wine-ie6 WINE prefix):

cd /to/directory/with/ie6setup
wine ie6setup.exe

If it still doesn't install please file a bug report at
http://bugs.winehq.org/ . I remember that ie6 installation worked in the past
so if it stopped working now then it's regression (so perhaps you need to do
regression testing to find out what broke it)...

Regression:

If you do a regression, please take care to take a number of Wine version. The last time it had been working under XP was around < 0.9.49.

Maybe it's because the default windows version in wine recently changed to XP?

Hi all, just adding my 2 cents here. I checked this out on ubuntu 7.10
wine-0.9.58 and fedora 7 wine-0.9.59, fresh .wine directory and got
exactly the same behavior.

Not because I want to, but my wine user has a intranet site he has to
access for work which *only* works with IE, I tried mozilla and I tried
the wine "iexplore" with his site to no avail.

If you try the "quiet" switch when installing

wine ie6setup.exe /q

it will allow the setup to continue, but unfortunately it failed for me
possibly because of connectivity issues, have a go and see what happens
for you.

I found the install file in ~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/
Internet Explorer/W2K/expinst.exe

which failed silently when I tried to execute it (even with
WINEDEBUG=-all), however I'm not sure that this is the correct file to
run, or even if the download was completely successful - it appeared so.

I found this bug id recently re-opened

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5463

but it might be appropriate to open a new one, I'll whack the debug data
in there for now.

incidentally I found this line in the debug

datafixme:wintrust:CryptCATAdminAddCatalog 0xdeadbeef L"C:\\windows\
\msdownld.tmp\\AS099AD2.tmp\\mplay2u.CAT" L"mplay2u.CAT" 0

0xdeadbeef eh? niiiicee!!! :-)

I'll try changing my wine to be W2K to see if that works.

Hi awdoyle,

I too wanted IE6 installed for the purpose of Outlook Express and its mail handling, particularly with folders as I have many. (...disregarding alternative clients with add ons for the moment)

I know IE6 can be installed using Codeweavers Crossover Linux app (based on WINE). With this install, OE is also installed. (You need to manually create a link to the .exe file)

I currently use that to access my hotmail, there are a few bugs I have come accross though. The configuration of that may give some clues to get Outlook Express working directly under WINE.

Huh? You've installed Linux and now want Outlook Express? There are
plenty of scripts around for downloading email from hotmail and dumping
into a local account ( maildir, imap, etc ). Surely you'd be better off
doing this and running a proper email client like Evolution? If you want
to go all out, you could set up your own mail server, with IMAP, a nice
webmail client ( roundcubemail is great ), and be done with hotmail
completely.

I know IE6 can be installed using Codeweavers Crossover Linux app (based on WINE).
I know people some people here will want to spit on me for mentioning
it, but there's a great script called ies4linux
( http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/page/Main_Page ) that installs IE6
( and IE7, but doesn't quite work for me ). So you don't need Crossover
just for IE6.

I only do this for testing IE rendering. Seriously, there are better
email clients around ...

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for your reply, I don't necessarily want "Outlook Express". I want an email client that can manage folders within hotmail, and will synchronise with the server so I can access the same mail from another machine (i.e. work) via the web.

If there is another free mail client that provides that functionality for hotmail, I will gladly use it.

I agree that there are much better mail clients around, but even with add ons to access hotmail, I still require my folders to be synchronised which they do not do.

Thinking of a larger picture here, there are countless people in the same situation as myself coming from Windows with hotmail accounts who use OE or Windows Live mail clients on their home machines and web access elsewhere.

In my opinion until there is a simple alternative, having outlook express or windows live mail work under wine would be a big win in helping windows users make the transition.

At the moment, this seems to be impossible:

I'm sure there *is* an API ( as OE uses it ), but it's not a public one.
If one appeared, I would consider writing a plugin of some kind for
Evolution ... if I had free time ( which at the moment I'm seriously
lacking in ).
