FIFA09 Error in DarWine

Post by Cydver »

Hi I'm using DarWine, the Kronenberg package and I've tried to install FIFA09.

I did everything as instructed, typed in my cd-key, had it install in the C Drive.

After installation though, I couldn't find the FIFA09 nor the EA Sports folder anywhere. There was, though, a shortcut on my desktop. Upon running the application from the shortcut, I got a message saying "FIFA09.exe has closed due to an error", and this on my Wine console:

May I also note that I am thus unable to uninstall FIFA09 and do a reinstall because the computer keep thinking I have FIFA09 installed. I have tried removing the registry data in regedit, but nothing works and running the uninstall program doesn't work either.

I'm using a Mac OSX 10.5.6.

Any help would much appreciated!

I don't know anything about FIFA09 in particular, but my suspicion would be that you've got no chance of getting it to run on one of those Darwine builds.

If you're adventurous, I'd recommend installing the latest version of Wine (1.1.17) using Macports, and if you're extra-adventurous, getting yourself the most recent XQuartz release candidate - off the top of my head, it's 2.3.3RC2. I've started to have some limited success with that combination (on a new Macbook Pro), although I still think you'd be pretty lucky to get FIFA09 going on OS X at this stage. I sort of got Mafia going the other day that way, but it crashes a lot.

YMMV. Also, I am a Wine noob so if this is terrible advice I take no responsibility for any calamities that may arise from following it. :)

Ok thanks :D

I will build with MacPorts and check it out.

You will almost certainly need the latest Xquartz release candidate -
it's got *much* better OpenGL support. Xquartz 2.3.3 RC2 is the
newest version - it's still not in the final release stages, but it's
getting close:

http://xquartz.macosforge.org/
http://static.macosforge.org/xquartz/downloads/

If you're building X from MacPorts, you should be getting semi up-to-
date stuff as well. You'll likely want to configure a Wine virtual
desktop via "winecfg" as well, as full screen apps can cause issues
with the X server.

Good luck, and let us know your results either way!

The reason you heard back from nobody is that this is a known problem
and is not related to Wine, but rather the implementation of OpenGL on
Apple's X11. Yes, the folks at the MacOSXForge's XQuartz project are
aware of this as it breaks attempts to create native ports of games for
the Mac, as well as breaking Wine's OpenGL implementation. It is stated
they may have fixed this with the next release of XQuartz, 2.3.3, but
this version is in release testing and problems appeared.

As to the release date of the program, I do not have any idea and when
it is released, Wine for MacOSX will have to be rebuilt specifically for it.

Oh, right I see. Sorry I'm new to my Mac so I have no idea what's going on half the time

This says it all. The current versions of Wine for MacOSX do not have OpenGL functionality included due to the broken implementation of OpenGL in Apple's X11. You can use either Fink or MacPorts to build your own Wine which may include OpenGL. Until this release is in the General Availability stage, it would not be a good idea to build a downloadable version with OpenGL functions built in.

It appears that MacPorts disables the building of Wine with OpenGL support. I would suggest that you contact their forums to have this corrected.

I don't want to install a release test version of XQuartz on my MacBook at this time so I cannot confirm if this is true with Mike Kronenberg's build environment. I can, however, look at the configure log from my last build and see if it is.
