Installing WINE on LinuxMint 17.1

Post by 13hm13 »

Hi!

I need to install MINT on an old Dell Inspirion 5100 laptop that is using a Pentium 4 CPU (2.4 Mhz).
I installed LinuxMint 17.1 on it in 2015.
I also have Win XP (sp 1) co-installed on same laptop.
I nee to use THIS laptop for various legacy Windows projects for which there are no modern replacement software.
An I maybe able to run some of then in WINE.
But which version of WINE? This WinwHQ thread seems to suggest v. 19:

Please advise me of the exact procedure , via TERMINAL, etc. to install an older version of WINE onto this old laptop.
Thx in advance!

Okay, on this old XP/LINUX Mint Dell, I was able to install Wine 1.6x. But had some error messages during install.
The main problem now is, I can't open any Windows *.exe files (launch programs), from Windows "My Programs" directory.
I click the exe file to open a Windows program. And nothing happens.
In other LINUX Mint computers I have, even ones as old as this laptop, and also running XP, Wine quickly opens Windows programs like Foobar, etc.
At the moment, I'm away from home , and the 5100 laptop is there.
But please give me some suggestions to solve these problems, when I get back.
Thanks!

Are you trying to run the apps from a Windows partition? That is not supported; you need to install them in Wine. https://gitlab.winehq.org/wine/wine/-/w ... em-in-wine

Good to know, and yikes that THAT action can break Windows. Though I think I have run FOOBAR, in a dedicated Linux Mint 19.1 pc (i.e., non partition Linux only pc) , from a separate Windows-only ssd , that I only use for stored files (and don't need to ever run independently as a Windows system).
