Wine Fails to Install WMP (9/10/11)

Post by jelad12216 »

I need WMP for an old abandonware game (The Movies.) Using a 64 bit prefix, trying to install WMP in winetricks in Lutris yields:

9: Error saying It can only be installed from Win 98 - Win Server 2003 (Running in compatibility mode does not help)

10: Says that it can only be installed on a 32 bit prefix

11: Seems to install, but incompletely, errors got, winetricks closes before install finishes

Trying a 32 bit prefix in winetricks:

9: Errors during install (wsh57 install completed, but installed file /home/***/.local/share/wineprefixes/aaa/dosdevices/c:/windows/syswow64/scrrun.dll not found)

10: Errors during install (same error)

11: Errors during install (same error)

Trying to install WMP 11 from another source seems to work somewhat? When the setup is launched the installer says that the system needs to be validated. If you click validate it just does nothing. So, using cabextract, you can launch wmp11.exe and it seems to download the program successfully. However, when trying to launch the Movies in this prefix, it still says that the Windows Media Player component is missing.

Downloading VLC/K Lite Codec Pack as alternatives does not help in replacing the game's WMP requirement.

Thank you

I've got it with Lutris with Installer V1.1 of game "The Movies: Stunts and Effects".

You need to install
  • directshow
    msacm32
    wmp10
    wmv9vcm
I tested it manually with Winetricks and it worked. The game is working, now.
