Linux/GTA IV and winetricks/PROTONTRICKS

Fresh install of Debian Bookworm (12) Stable. I'm also fresh to Linux.

Trying to get GTA IV Liberty City to run, and on ProtonDB it shows as Platinum. Some penquins are even elated it just runs out-of-the-box on Steam. This has not been the case for me.

So, after using countless guides (some old), I found wine. Installed wine-staging for Debian. Think it's like 7.0 or something.

And then I found Protontricks. So here's the deal.

When I run ProtonTricks, I get this winetricks pop-up that says:

Running /home/user/.var/app/com.github.Matoking.protontricks/cache/protontricks/proton/GE-Proton9-11/bin/wineserver -w. This will hang until all wine processes in prefix=/home/user/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/12210/pfx terminate

I then run a

ps aux

and find no offending wineserver process running. So I'm stumped. In short, halp.
