AIS configuration software can't open serial port in Kubuntu 20.04

Post by stanne »

Hello, I would appreciate help with setting up a configuration software in Kubuntu 20.04, and later in Lubuntu 20.04. I'm running Wine 7.0. The software is proAIS2 01.23.01 of 24 Sep 2021, by Digia Plc. The device I'm trying to program is the em-trak B954 AIS transponder, connected via USB.

ProAIS starts allright. However, the transponder is not detected, which should otherwise be the case. I could produce an error message saying, that proAIS wasn't able to open a serial port. Hence, I followed these instructions in the wiki: https://wiki.winehq.org/Wine_User's_Gui ... llel_Ports

1. Added myself to the group "dialout" -- no effect.
2. Created entries in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wine\Ports However, I didn't find /dev/ttyUSB0 on my system so I used /dev/ttyACM0 instead. -- no effect.

"lsusb" lists the transponder all right in the terminal. ls -l ~/.wine/dosdevices/ currently reads:

Code: Select all

lrwxrwxrwx 1 blauwal blauwal  1 Feb  3 20:48 z: -> /
What's wrong? Can I fix it? If so, how?

I would be very happy not to have use Windows and have the hassle of an encrypted dual Win/Linux system install.

Thanks in advance!

What happens with some of these types of devices is that they use a windows driver that the software installs. As far as I know wine doesn't support that. Device drivers should be native to the OS. lsusb as an example can "see" and identify a USB device - but that doesn't mean there is a driver to support the device.

Thanks for your reply. How can I find out what exactly goes wrong? Is the effort worth trying to find out? Or would you recommend to just get a windows system in order to configure my device?
Thanks in advance.
