Ubuntu on Thumbdrive: How to Install Wine

Post by gunner169 »

I have a laptop that I want to boot off an Ubuntu thumbdrive.

Will Wine work off the thumbdrive as well? If not, no point going any farther.

Thanks

Yes, it will work.

Make sure your data is saved on the thumbdrive.
There are two options for this:
If you want to use the USB drive only with this laptop
- A full Ubuntu installation on the thumbdrive (recommended)

or if you need to share the drive with multiple laptops/computers
- A Live Ubuntu USB Drive With Persistent Storage

After this, you can install Wine in the usual way.

Thank you for the quick reply.
Having a couple of issues getting past the install of Ubuntu every time I boot up.

I followed the directions: https://ubuntu.com/tutorials/create-a-u ... on-windows

It stops at Installation Type. Tried clicking on all of the buttons and when finally trying Install Now, a popup stating: No root system is defined. Please correct from the partitioning menu.Which is greyed out. Any ideas for there? (As I look through the net for answers)

this will work. I have a Chromebook with modified firmware that has been running linux Mint (ubuntu derivative) for over 2 years from a MicroSD card and initially was running it off a USB stick. I would recommend, just me personally, not using a live version with persistent storage - ONLY because I didn't/don't know how to expand that persistent storage to make room for more things such as wine and more windows apps. I'm not experienced at this stuff so someone like jkfloris can probably tell you how to do that if you go that route.

Do you have a dvd drive on the laptop? If so, I would create the installation dvd, then boot it, then use it to install to the USB stick. In that way it is a simple burn iSO, boot dvd, using ubuntu's install to install to the USB drive. Be sure to watch where it is going to put the boot info - it might default to your hard disk and you don't want that.
