Hi there
I am an old man trying to keep up with my son but people who give instructions on these forums seem to think that we are all hi powered users who only need the minimum of guidance to achieve perfection.
Let me tell you that is not the case. I am a novice with linux and wanted to have it so that I can do some work for my son that is linux based on the web.
This is fine as the mail and Internet browsing automatically loads with ubuntu. I have a multi screen set up on my flight simulator and need to load a windows program to support the screen on this system.
I have read up on wine and am sure this will be perfect for me but I can't get it to install and am sure everything is messed up by now.
What I need is a step by step guide as to how to install Wine on Ubuntu without the usual gaps and assumptions that we the new ones know something let alone everything.
Heres Hoping

2008/12/26 Brevalan <[email protected]>:
1. Start "Synaptic", the program package installer. (System ->
Administration, I think. Somewhere around there.)
2. In the search box, type "wine" and click "search". You should see a
list, and in the list will be "wine" with the description "Microsoft
Windows Compatibility Layer (Binary Emulator and Library)" or
something like that.
3. Click on the checkbox next to the name "wine" and select the option
"Mark for installation".
4. Click the big button "Apply".
This will download and install Wine.
If your program doesn't work in this version, you may want to try a
more current version of Wine. http://winehq.org/download/deb has the
instructions, step by step, with pictures for how to do this with
Synaptic.
What's the actual program you're trying to run?

The program I want to run is MaxiVista
MaxiVista will run additional screens through a PC connected to the home network. it is very effective when used with MS Flight Simulator .
I have 3 screens running at the moment 2 from my Laptop and one from a desktop (this is the one with Linux.) The desktop one is not running right now until I get wine installed.
I am getting a hand me down Monster PC from my son which will run 3 Screens on 2 graphics cards (cockpit front view, Cockpit Right look out and a smaller screen for GPS and Radio Stack). The Desktop will run the Cockpit Left Lookout.I will also run The Laptop to make sure that I am in touch with the world.
Should keep me busy for the winter.
Thanks all for the advice ,I will let you know how I get on.
Cheers

Brevalan, we must be twins. I'm a nooby, and a flatulus antiquatus and wondered about this apparently non-drinkable WINE all these experts talk about. You expressed my concerns perfectly. My immediate trial is to install Irfanview to run in Ubuntu 8.10. But I did find the Wine which David so kindly explained. Looks like I'm installing ttf-liberation, winbind, wine and wine-gecko. I'm making detailed notes for family at http://www.sticksite.com/linux/ and like you, I expect this to keep me busy most of the winter.

I would like to thank the forum for solving my problem. I have wine installesd and even managed to load MaxiVista and synergy. Great result
I was flying ove rVictoria Falls las night with 3 screens running like mad.( I spent my last 5 years of work in Africa.)
James.
While i hear you loud and clear, us beginners have a problem with the faqs very often as they tend to be a bit technical for us and assume we know everything other than what is on the faq
I did look through the FAQs but couldn't find what I got here on the forum. Now this forum can from my point of view be closed unless you feel that this is a FAQ and you want to use oit as such.
I am sure I will be back soon

And I am glad that you solved your problem. Please post what you did as
