PopCap games won't work any longer!!!

Post by Berserkr »

I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 and, ever since then, I am not able to play any PopCap games at all whatsoever via Wine. Everytime I play any PopCap game via Wine, I get the following error message....

Can anybody please explain to me what this means and what can be done to fix this problem? Here is the entire bugging message contained in that error window:

What version of wine previously worked?

I really couldn't tell you. I never bothered to check the version of Wine I was using when Wine was rendering those games correctly. I'll try an earlier version of Wine. Maybe that will work.

I installed Wine 0.9.61 i386 and I am still unable to get any PopCap games to work. I cannot uninstall & install every version of Wine until I, hopefully, get a version that works. Is there anyone in this forum who can, from looking at the error information I provided, tell me why I am no longer able to run PopCap games successfully? I imagine that the person or people who develop Wine frequent this forum often. Can any of you please tell me why I am not able to play those games any longer? Pleeeeeaaaaaaaaasssssssseeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, actually, the developers for the most part don't frequent the forum.

As to why you can no longer play these games, my first guess would be this:
I recently installed Ubuntu 8.1
I don't use Ubuntu myself, but from reading the forum regularly, I get the distinct impression that 8.10 has lots of problems with Wine.

As to practical suggestions (other than downgrading to 8.04): when you tried different versions of Wine did you reinstall the games to a clean wineprefix? For that matter, when you upgraded to 8.10 did you reinstall the games to a clean wineprefix? If the answer is no, then try that. Delete or rename ~/.wine and reinstall your games; a new ~/.wine will automatically be created. If you've tried that, and it didn't work, then post console output.

I think I'll try something other than Ubuntu. I think I'll give Debian a run & see how that works out. Thank you for your prompt reply.

At least Peggle Extreme works fine here (not ubuntu). So you have to ask your distro forum what did they broke.
I'll start from completely removing (yes removing not disabling it doesn't work) pulseaudio. Installing latest (yes latest as can be found of manufacturer's website) video drivers, not what comes with ubuntu.
