Running the Sims 3 in Ubuntu 16.04

Post by GhostCode »

I am trying to install the Sims 3 onto Ubuntu. I have Wine installed onto my PC which imports dll etc. files from Windows for use in Linux. I have followed a lot of tutorials and have had no luck. I installed from CD, the new version which requires Origin to be installed. Install went smoothly, with no errors in the process. Origin runs fine under Wine, but when I press "Play" the orange button dulls for five seconds and then becomes click-able again. I have tried running "TS3W.exe", "TS3.exe", "S3Launcher.exe", and all other executable files in the Sims 3 directory. My Sims files are stored under "C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\The Sims 3" with the main game under "C:...\Game". There is no EA stuff under my Documents directory. I am using Ubuntu 16.04. I cannot start the Sims or the Launcher, but Origin seems okay. I have seen this done before, a quick Google search will show you it can be done, but the video tutorials are all outdated, and do not require Origin installation. How can I install The Sims 3 in Ubuntu?

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying about your wine setup. What do you mean you're importing dll's from windows? Are you setting up overrides using dll's you've grabbed off a windows partition or something?

What version of wine are you using? How did you install it? Did you install origin and wine the usual way, or did you simply copy over your origin install from windows? Have you run the game from the console and gotten any error messages about it?
What linux are you using, ie Ubuntu, Slackware, etc? What video card and what video drivers?

BTW, for the sims 3 launcher, you need some stuff like dotnet 2.0 installed via something like winetricks.
