Submitting Test Results to AppDB & Moderator Frustration

Post by JustUseLinux »

Ok, this is the last time I will try to use the Forums to communicate, if you moderate this post. Good people are trying to submit to the AppDB & ask questions here on these forums, but trigger happy moderators are deleting posts and submissions without even reading them. Yesterday I tried to ask a question about why my AppDB submission was rejected, despite the fact that I ran the program directly on Wine without PlayOnLinux, and I got:
Hello JustUseLinux,

You are receiving this notification because your topic "Submitting Test
Results to AppDB" at "WineHQ Forums" was disapproved by a moderator or
administrator.

The following reason was given for the disapproval:

The reported message has the only purpose to advertise for a website or
another product.
I submitted to AppDB World of Warcraft, and in the description I mentioned that I didn't use PlayOnLinux, and I got
Submitted test data deleted
-------------------------------------------------------
The test report you submitted for 'World of Warcraft 6.2.2' has been deleted.
The action was performed by Ken Sharp
Reasons given
Do not submit test reports for third party Wine wrappers such as PlayOnLinux, Wineskin, etc. Please retest in plain Wine and resubmit. http://wiki.winehq.org/AppDB_Test_Results_Guidelines

Best regards.

It seems Moderators were appointed to lead, not read.

This makes things very frustrating.
Also I don't know what is wrong with using PlayOnLinux ? It makes separate prefixes, that make using it safe, so that you don't screw up wine for every program you have on your PC.

I was going to do several how-tos for several programs, but if I can't get threw your red tape, and get moderators to actually read what I'm doing, then I give up.

What should I do ?

I did read http://wiki.winehq.org/AppDB_Test_Results_Guidelines

I read every word of your original post, including the blatant ad for your YouTube channel that was the reason I disapproved it. The fact that the rest of your post had a legitimate question was the reason I did not immediately ban you as a spammer. I hope that clarifies the moderation policies.

As for the AppDB, as the email you received clearly states, test reports using third party wrappers are not accepted. The reason is that such tools often use patched versions of Wine, native dlls, and/or other tweaks that the user is unaware of and fails to mention in the report. The purpose of the AppDB is to document the performance of unpatched Wine and to thoroughly document any tweaks (native dlls, settings changes) that are needed. A report that simply says the user used POL fails to do that. In addition, POL scripts in particular often apply unnecessary overrides that can cause problems.

You can, however, manually apply any tweaks called for by the POL scripts (other than using patched Wine) and provide step-by-step instructions for doing so in your test report.
