Installing Newer iTunes Releases

Post by Sylnox »

Is there any way to do this? I've tried a few installers from iTunes 10 to the current version and they all pop up a message saying that iTunes needs Windows 7 (or Vista for 10) 64 bit, then terminate without doing anything. My wineprefix is already 64 bit and I tried setting it to Windows 7 mode with winetricks, but it didn't seem to help. Is there any way to get past that message? I know iTunes doesn't work well with Wine, but most of the issues seem to be with the store and sync functions and I don't need either of those, so I wanted to give it a try.

I tested the current version of iTunes in 1.7.51, and while the installer claims to succeed, trying to run the installed app results in a message that it was not installed correctly, and it cannot be started. Based on the installer console output, the problem appears to be https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35092. The AppDB has test reports from people who claim to have gotten version 12.x to run, so you may want to post your question there. https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... ngId=87661

Thanks for the info, but how did you get it to install in the first place? No matter what I do, the "evaluating launch conditions" phase of the iTunes installer gives me an "Install Failed" message with the content like "This iTunes installer requires Windows 7 64-bit edition or later." Then the installation aborts. If I try a 32-bit version or an earlier installer with a different minimum supported Windows version, I get essentially the same message. I also tried installing it with PlayOnLinux because I found posts from people who successfully installed iTunes that way, but it just dies with the message "Error in POL_Wine
Wine seems to have crashed" followed by "Error in POL_Shortcut
Binary not found: iTunes.exe
Have you installed the program to the default location?"

If it helps, I'm on Mint 17.2 64 bit with Cinnamon running the latest stable release of Wine.

Thanks for the advice. I finally managed to actually get iTunes 12 to install courtesy of PlayOnLinux. I'm not sure if the difference was the result of some fancy wineprefix configuration or the fact that PlayOnLinux uses a 1.7.x version of Wine while Mint's package installer only gave me the option to install the latest stable 1.6 release, but whatever it was it seems to be working.
