When I installed Overdrive for Windows (an audiobook downloading/management software) it put a launcher on the desktop named OverDrive for Windows and a second launcher named OverDrive for Windows.lnk also. Either one will launch the application.
The *.lnk file has a text file icon on it, the launcher has the Wine icon on it.
I renamed the *.lnk file to see if it was needed and the other icon continued to work fine so I don't think the *.lnk file is needed. Can I simply delete the *.lnk file from the desktop for Wine installs?
