I'm trying to run Max Payne 2 on my Netbook

Post by Rye Miller »

Hi folks, I'm trying to run MP2 on my Acer Aspire One D260 under Lubuntu 14.04 but on startup I get this error (from the game):

"Max Payne 2 requires a Microsoft DirectX 9.0 compatible display adapter. Please consult... etc."

I know that the integrated video card is not the issue, because I remember playing MP2 just fine on the very same netbook under Windows 7.

I tried to change the windows version in wine settings for "compatibility mode" as suggested online but I had no luck.
So I'm thinking maybe it has something to do with the linux drivers ?

Thanks in advance to anyone kind enough to offer some help

Could be. Older Intel GPUs lacked some DX9 functions in the hardware, but made up for it with software emulation in the Windows driver. That emulation is not included in the Linux driver.

A friend of mine has an Intel motherboard and uses the on board video. I handed him an Nvidia card and he won't have nothing to do with it. LoL Some people have issues with name brands I suppose. I just got off the phone with him and asked how he manages and if he has a game graphically challenging.

He runs stuff in Windows XP but this should help you too. As it turns out he knows all about Max Payne, he said there should be a graphic box that opens before the game actually runs? Anyway look for an option button and turn everything off and low settings. Then with each successful run bring the options back up one by one.

Unfortunately, the error occurs before anything shows up. It would be pointless anyway, it's not a settings problem, as I realized thanks to the user Dimesio, this netbook lacks the proper hardware. :(
Thanks anyway for your input !
