Majesty game with low fps

Post by ZachZ »

Disclaimer: This is my first endeavor into the Wine community and forums. My apologies if I missed something in the rules or FAQ in posting; let me know if I've done something wrong and I will seek to correct it.

The problem at hand:

I have successfully run the game Majesty on my Mac, but it seems the frame rate maxes out at 3 to 4 fps.

The details:

My computer is a MacBook Pro running 10.9.5 with a 2.4 GHz Intel i5, and 4GB memory. The graphics card is Intel HD 288 MB.
I am using engine WS9Wine1.7.31 and wrapper version Wineskin 2.6.0 to run Steam. This works perfectly fine.
The game in steam is called Majesty Gold HD. Launching the game works fine (the intro video is choppy but I don't mind that).
Previously, the entire game was flickering with black and was practically unplayable. I changed the screen options when Steam opens so that it runs in a forced virtual console at current resolution, and that seemed to fix the flickering.
I noticed that the game runs much slower (2.6 fps up to 4.1 at best) than I remembered it to, and looked online for advice. The most popular option, setting a few launch options in steam (-w -useddblit -blitmovietobackground) did not seem to change the fps for me. I began to expect that the port might have a problem, and not steam. This may well be a poor assumption on my part, but that is why I am asking here for advice. How would you move forward from here?

Final note:
I did see that third party applications should not be discussed here, and should be taken to their respective forums. Should I be looking for Wineskin's forum to post this question? I elected not to write this comment in the appdb for the game here (https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... ngId=83862) because that seemed to be the place for bug reports and users far more... experienced than I.

Long first post, sorry about that.

Many thanks.

I've only just started using Wine over the past couple days and really only well enough to figure out how to apply the wrappers made by other people in most cases... but with that in mind!

I finally got Majesty to run (without a pre-made wrapper WHOO!) and experienced that sluggishness you were mentioning.

On a complete lark, I went to "Screen Options" and ticked off "Use Mac Driver instead of X11." The arrow keys now seem to scroll at appropriate speed but using the arrow cursor is a bit excessive...

It is intriguing that you posted this 1 year to date from when I originally posted. It is wonderful that you seem to have found a workaround!

I turned off the Mac Driver per your recommendation, and now the fps has increased. However, I am still reading 6-7 frames per second, which isn't my ideal (if everything in life worked...) target of 20fps. Keep in mind, I am using the cheat 'FRAME IT' to replace the number of days in a quest with the current fps. Nonetheless, thank you very, very much for this tip! While it is slow, 7 frames is actually quite bearable and I am able to enjoy watching my wizards... well, walk out and die, to be honest, but at acceptable speeds anyway.

I'm curious what your frames are running at. Could you test them perhaps, between reliving the nostalgic and hilarious questlines that is Majesty? It would be very much appreciated.

I would have edited my last post, but in waiting for it to be submitted I checked the main index of the forum, and put two and two together. I am utilizing Wineskin (which isn't supported in this forum) to run Steam, and therefore Majesty, while it sounds like you may be using Wine (which IS this forum). So.

I may well be suggested to move this conversation elsewhere. If such is the case, I would be delighted with your input, and have regardless been overjoyed to see someone else playing Majesty once again.
