AoE3 - some sound works - some doesn't!!!????

Post by spokeman »

The sound for the cinematics (opening scenes) works just fine. The in game sound? zip, nada, zero, nothing. Not a peep.

Here is what I've done:
Followed all the AoE3 appdb install instructions.
  • see https://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager. ... n&iId=3795
    copied mfc42.dll, quartz.dll, d3dx9_36.dll, l3codecx.ax, (+l3codeca.acm as per Wine wiki)
    registered same as native
wine registry registered l3codex.ax (as per various install instructions on the appdb)
    added d3dx9_25.dll
    added msxml4.dll msxml4r.dll
All dll were copied from a working dual boot partition where I have been running AoE3.

It runs a-ok - mostly - just NO sound, and that is no good. Can't keep up with the action w/o sound.

Further steps taken:
I've changed the audio output in winecfg. Doesn't work. That makes AoE3 crash when starting - and I never get a message why - the "detail" just sits there and shows nothing.

I've turned off pulseaudio as per here: viewtopic.php?t=1457
That didn't work - and had some bad side effects on getting my sound to work again when turning pulseaudio back on - probably related to how I should restart it in upstart - but idk - and that is another learning curve and ot for here.

My system
Ubuntu 14.04 (xubuntu, actually)
HDA Intel PCH sound
Wine 1.6.2
[I also have an NVida card, which has sound on it - but it isn't utilized anywhere. I wonder if maybe I should disable it? But I have NO idea how to do that. But it is recognized by my system.]

I see the identical problem has come up before, here: viewtopic.php?t=16251. But I'm already a higher version of Wine.

So how do I go about getting the sound to work? Thoughts on next steps?

Ok - no joy here. No solutions afaik. Soooo - I'll post a review giving AoE3 a bad rating, so that other folks know that there may be issues. Pita, if you ask me. Of course, I can still use the dual boot for XP and play it that way - but avoiding that was the point.

Your Wine version is old; try upgrading to the latest development release.

You didn't mention whether your OS is 32 or 64 bit. If the latter, try a 32 bit wineprefix.
I've turned off pulseaudio as per here: viewtopic.php?t=1457
That post is almost 7 years old. That advice is long outdated.
