winmx not working under wine/opensuse

Post by lalimn »

Opensuse 13.1 Wine 1.7.2-2.1-x86_64 Winmx 3.54b4

I have been using opensuse/wine/winmx for a few [8 approx] years now. Occaisionally I have run into trouble but have usually found answers to solve problems. This time however, I am stumped.
Everything was running OK, I had just done opensuse updates thru zypper and was having no problems. I had to reboot and now I cannot get Winmx to start. I kept getting the Winmx has encountered a serious error... window and could get no further. I tried uninstalling winmx and reinstalling, to no avail. I usually go with the latest version of wine and it gets updated thru the wine repos in Avast. I uninstalled wine completely and turned off the wine repo and went back to the version that opensuse has in their repo [1.7.2.1-x86_64]. Then tried reinstalling winmx, but still got that same error [Winmx has encountered a serious error... ].
I have tried attaching a backtrace file from the "Winmx has encountered a serious error... " window, but .txt or doc are not allowed to upload. I am pasting it in at bottom.

I have attached a snapshot of how far I get during installation. It installs the installer, but stops at installing the program. I have check the AppDB, but there is no information there.

Could some please advise?
thanks

Is this the app you're talking about? http://patch.winmxconex.com/ It works fine for me in openSUSE 12.3.
I had just done opensuse updates thru zypper
What exactly did you update?
I usually go with the latest version of wine and it gets updated thru the wine repos in Avast.
I have never heard of repos in Avast, and have no idea what might be in those packages. You should be getting the latest Wine packages from http://en.opensuse.org/Wine#Repositories.

Upgrade Wine from the real repository, and reinstall to a clean 32 bit wineprefix. If the problem persists, post the whole terminal output, including the command used to run the app.

yes this is the program I am talking about and I have used it, successfully, thru wine in various versions of opensuse since 11.0, up to and including [for the past year], 13.1
What exactly did you update?
well I did not make a list of the updates, but I do remember that there was nothing to update for Wine at that time.

Sorry my bad [Avast] should have been openSuse Yast Repositories

is there a troubleshooting guide to tell me how to "reinstall to a clean 32 bit wineprefix" ? Do you mean to reinstall WinMX to a clean 32 bit wineprefix. Is a wineprefix a new wine folder?
I don't think I have ever done that before, but am willing to learn.

Thank You dimesio

Yes, I mean reinstall WinMX to a clean 32 bit wineprefix. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#32_bit_wineprefix

OK, so I updated wine to its most recent version.
and following the how to at item 7.2 [http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#32_bit_wineprefix], I opened a terminal [bash:Konsole] and typed:

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/dabud/wineWinMX32 winecfg

It gave me an error msg "You do not own this folder" so I went and changed permissions so that I did own the folder.
and ran the command again.

Code: Select all

dabud@linux-7w5e:~> WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=/home/dabud/wineWinMX32 winecfg

dabud@linux-7w5e:~>
The winecfg window opened... I am not sure what to do here? Do I just close it?

The wineWinMX32 folder was created in the place I designated.

I opened a terminal in /home/dabud/wineWinmx32 and directed it to install in the new wineWinMX32 prefix/folder and this was the result:

Code: Select all

dabud@linux-7w5e:~/wineWinMX32> wine Winmx354.exe

dabud@linux-7w5e:~/wineWinMX32>
NOTE: The "This program has encountered a serious error and has to close" window popped up.

I tried to install Winmx by double clicking the exe and directing it to install in the new wineWinMX32 prefix/folder and I got the same error I got in my original post:
see attachement re: "This program has encountered a serious error and has to close" window .

Did I not do something correctly?

That means the folder already existed and with wrong permissions. If you want to create new Wine prefix, you need to rename or delete existing folder, for example: "rm -rf ~/wineWinMX32".
lalimn wrote:The winecfg window opened... I am not sure what to do here? Do I just close it?
Usually you run winecfg if you want to configure something, like change DPI or install a theme... If this is not the case, just run the installer of your application (alternatively, you can run wineboot instead of winecfg to create empty Wine prefix with default settings, but this is unnecessary step if you plan to run an installer right after that).
lalimn wrote:I opened a terminal in /home/dabud/wineWinmx32 and directed it to install in the new wineWinMX32 prefix/folder and this was the result
If you opened new terminal and plan to install to non-default Wine prefix you need to set WINEPREFIX. If you want to run an application from non-default Wine prefix, you also need to set this environment variable. If you did this right, then by installing in the default location (usually somewhere in C:\Program Files\) the application will be installed within your specified Wine prefix.
lalimn wrote:I tried to install Winmx by double clicking the exe and directing it to install in the new wineWinMX32 prefix/folder
By double-clicking on the .exe you most likely installed the application in your default Wine prefix ~/.wine - it does not matter to where you "directed" it.
lalimn wrote:Did I not do something correctly?
I think you do not understand what Wine prefix is. Each Wine prefix is like independent Windows installation. This is why it is important to set WINEPREFIX environment variable, or your program will be installed in the default Wine prefix.

Imagine you are on Windows 7 and you have access to network drive Z: located on computer with Windows XP, if you install an application on Windows 7 somewhere in Z:, it will not be magically installed on XP in this example. Hope this analogy will help to understand you better what Wine prefix is and why you cannot just point the installer running in default Wine prefix to some other Wine prefix located on Z: virtual drive.

Basically, all of above means you need to start over with new WINEPREFIX, make sure this time that the folder where you plan to create new Wine prefix does not exist yet. Also, run wine as normal user only, and make sure that both WINEARCH and WINEPREFIX are correctly set before you try to run your .exe file. Remember, that if you open new terminal (or double-click on an .exe file), WINEARCH and WINEPREFIX will not be set anymore.

Alternatively, if managing multiple Wine prefixes is too complicated for you, you may want to remove or rename your ~/.wine folder (for example, "mv ~/.wine ~/.wine.old") and create new 32-bit Wine prefix in its place:

Code: Select all

WINEARCH=win32 WINEPREFIX=~/.wine wineboot
This way you will be able to install your application without specifying WINEPREFIX environment variable (for example by double-clicking on the installer) because ~/.wine is the default.

Re: winmx not working under wine/opensuse

Post by lalimn »

I have tried several different ways to do this [create a 32 bit wineprefix on a 64 bit system].
I do not understand the errors mentioned in the code snippets. It seems to be giving the same errors for each try.

All results seem to be the same. It starts the Winmx installer and as soon as it gets to the Winmx License Agreement window, I get the: "This program has encountered a serious error and has to close" window.

Each time I created a different wineprefix I made sure that no other .wine folder existed before I went ahead.
I'm not sure where to go from here.

The following are the last three ways I tried:

1ST

Re: winmx not working under wine/opensuse

Post by dimesio »

You're creating the 32 bit wineprefix correctly, but in try 2 and try 3 you're not installing to it. If you use a wineprefix other than the default, you need to specify it in the command line whenever you want to install something to it or run something in it.

Try 1 should have worked, because you created the wineprefix by running the installer. Comparing your console output to mine, it's the same up to the crash. On my system, instead of a crash I get a couple of urlmon and ieframe fixmes. So my next question is: did you install wine-gecko? You need to.

Yes wine-gecko is installed. version 2.31.
A thought occurs to me as I am typing this. If the current wine-gecko requires ver 2.31, do I need have ver. 2.21 and ver 2.24 installed?. At the time just before this problem occured, I remember seeing in: Applications>Wine>Uninstall Wine Programs that wine-gecko ver 2.21 and 2.24 were still installed even tho it had upgraded to ver 2.31. I deleted these two older versions. Could that have caused a problem?

Is it possible to revert to an older version of wine and work back up to the current version of wine to see where the problem may have occured?
If so, how would I do that?

That might have deleted wine-gecko from that wineprefix, but you've created new wineprefixes since then. Wine-gecko should have been installed in the new wineprefixes on creation, either from the wine-gecko package or by downloading it from Sourceforge.

What happens when you run wine iexplore in the 32 bit wineprefix?

It works. Internet Explorer browser opens and WineHQ page opens.

This is what terminal says: Does it look normal?

Re: winmx not working under wine/opensuse

Post by lalimn »

On another note, I have another machine [Machine B] that is dual boot Win7 and opensuse 13.1.
Because I don't use openSuse on that machine much it does not get updated as often.
It currently is running Wine 1.7.11-316.1-x86_64 and wine-gecko 2.21.
I did not have Winmx installed on it, but tonight I installed it with no problems.
I am going to update the Wine program on that machine[Machine B] and see if Winmx is still ok.

I went to Yast and updated Wine to its latest version 1.7.31-388.1x86_64
I opened winmx and it is still running - no errors.

Any Ideas? why that would be? Could it be that opensuse is broken on the other [original] machine [Machine A] ?

Re: winmx not working under wine/opensuse

Post by lalimn »

Thanks for your help dimesio

Nothing I tried worked, so I ended up upgrading to opensuse 13.2 and when I installed wine 1.7... and then winmx - all seems fine now.

The only three things I can think might have been a problem originally.
1] I was messing around with window sizing because it would not minimize.
2] I installed OurMX and tried it, but never ran both of them together at the same time.
3] I deleted older versions of wine-gecko.

Was something in opensuse 13.1 broke? Moot ? now.
