F20 - Red Alert 3...
F20 - Red Alert 3...
Hi,
Yes I read the sticky about Fedora packaging, but I used the instructions provided on the Wine website and did not install from the package manager. Instead I installed using yum.
I have the actual game disk, serial code and everything.
I have a new computer with god like specifications (imo).
Now, the reason I got this game was because WineHQ lists it as platinum. I.e it works via wine.
However, upon installing (which it immediately tried to get me to quit during installing even though it was copying the files over just fine...), I was able to 'run' the game. What that means, is that I navigated to the click and opened up the Autorun.exe with Wine. Immediately the screen departed from reality, switched to a very small display mode and then offset the screen the top left giving me less than a quarter view of the screen. Alt-F2 then r, put this back into perspective although the screen was still tiny I could actually see it (oh yes and the cursor was locked in to much annoyance, anyone know how to release the mouse?)
Anyway, I get past the first cut scene...the second cut scene and onto a loading screen with a star like icon in the top right, mouse cursor in the center. Music plays for a while...then it stops. Then I get the "Force Quit" option.
I don't really know what to do. I've tried setting wine to run in Vista/Win7/WinXp mode, but still no joy. Yet this game is platinum...

Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
It's the packages themselves that are the problem, not how you install them. AFAIK, Fedora is no longer packaging plain Wine at all, which means you have to build it from source.Meshsync wrote: Yes I read the sticky about Fedora packaging, but I used the instructions provided on the Wine website and did not install from the package manager. What does wine --version return?
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
wine-1.7.28 (Compholio)
I have a suspicion that the problem is not to do with wine but rather the display driver. I have a Radeon R9 2XX series graphics card and I think I'm using the standard open source driver, which isn't fit for purpose. I'm currently looking at installing the Proprietary driver which means I'm going to have to uninstall gnome...T_T.

Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
The open source driver may well be the problem; however, if using the proprietary driver doesn't fix it, either report the problem to wine-compholio or retest in plain Wine if you want help here. The Wine version returned clearly shows that you are not using plain Wine.Meshsync wrote:wine-1.7.28 (Compholio)

I can't install the proprietary driver. AMD Catalyst and Fedora...aren't the best of friends... I'll take a look at the plain wine, but I used the links on the wine website -_-;;.
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
The links to distro packages are provided as a convenience to users, just as links to third party apps are provided. It is not meant as an endorsement of any of them.
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
In the mean time, I grabbed the latest from SourceForge and I'm currently proceeding through http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit#head ... 86f6192f2f in the hope that it'll actually install on my system because 32bit failed.
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
I can try to help you troubleshoot your problems building Wine, but really, the issue is likely to be the open source graphics driver, and installing plain Wine probably won't solve your problem.
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
Considering the problem (and no at the moment I'm at square one...own fault) when I managed to get wine64 briefly working *ahem*. I managed to get to the main menu, although there was no text.dimesio wrote:I can try to help you troubleshoot your problems building Wine, but really, the issue is likely to be the open source graphics driver, and installing plain Wine probably won't solve your problem.
Now, back to setting up for wine 64. I have three sets of instructions...
http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit#head ... 86f6192f2f as I showed before
http://wiki.winehq.org/Wine64 << this one has at least two.
Which instructions do I need? The 32bit wouldn't load because I was missing 32bit libraries (never come across that problem before >_>;;;). I simply want to play RA3 XD
Edit. Oh i see. It's the first one. I don't necessarily intend to play 64bit games so I'm happy just building a 32bit on a 64bit... brb with more problems.
Edit. Yes. 1.

That's clearly a problem. My guess would be that you're missing 32 bit gcc, and possibly other needed 32 bit tools as well.Code: Select all

Why are you trying to build such an old version? The current development release is 1.7.30.Code: Select all

Maybe you might want to tell them to update the Source Forge after all it's: "Our official source release site. "
It would be nice if there were some consistency...
Needless to say, the only distribution I've had any luck with so far is Ubuntu, which brings me to an interesting topic.
AMD Catalyst uninstalls Wine 1.7 and vice versa. I could not install both of them together, which I found highly surprising. So I'm stuck somewhat. I tested on Fedora, Kubuntu, Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Arch... whoever put that platinum rating on RA3 was lying. >_>
Not once has it played out of the box.
Also...the stable version on Ubuntu... the Msiexec crashes constantly. So I'm forced to use the beta...
Needless to say, switching distro seems to have made it work.
Fresh install + following ubuntu's instructions for the open source radeon driver and skipping wine 1.6.

Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
The Fedora packagers already know that, and they also acted against the advice of the wine-compholio developers. Other distros package wine-compholio separately.Meshsync wrote:Maybe you might want to tell them to update the Source Forge after all it's: "Our official source release site. "
Yes, there would, but WineHQ has no control over what distros and other projects do.It would be nice if there were some consistency...
That shouldn't happen. I would report that to the package maintainer.AMD Catalyst uninstalls Wine 1.7 and vice versa. I could not install both of them together, which I found highly surprising.
In most cases, the latest development release is going to perform better than the stable.Fresh install + following ubuntu's instructions for the open source radeon driver and skipping wine 1.6.
Since plain Wine works, you should report the bug in the Fedora package to Fedora and/or wine-compholio.
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
No dimesio. This is not the source forge on Fedora's site. This is the source forge on the front page of WineHQ. But I'm about to create a new thread...
Taken today.

Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
I don't see any problem with either of the links on the WineHQ home page. The link under "Latest Releases" leads to the Announcement page for 1.7.30. The other link on the home page, under News, is a direct download link for the 1.7.30 tarball. All links are updated with every new release.
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
I just posted an image dimesio. Under "Wine Source Download"
Re: F20 - Red Alert 3...
I sent an email to the developer's list about it. I'm not really sure whose bug it is, Sourceforge or WineHQ.
