Hero Lab 5.2 can no longer recieve game updates

Post by interstella5555 »

I have been having issues recently with the subject program from Lone Wolf Development, which I have currently installed on a wineprefix through PlayOnLinux. Up to last week the program worked beautifully - no problems whatsoever. Last week there was a major internet issue regarding the revoking of an SSL certificate for the company's website, which temporarily disabled the update function for everyone. The company announced early this week that they were able to fix the problem and everything is working fine. This being said, I am still having the exact issue with my wineprefix - every time the program starts up, it automatically checks for updates and returns with an error message reading the following;

"The latest updates for Hero Lab could not be retrieved. Please verify that your internet connection is active and try fetching updates again. If the problem persists, click here to visit our website and check for a solution:

http://www.wolflair.com/index.php?conte ... ess_errors

For debugging: Error retrieving data! Please verify that you can load web sites in your web browser, and that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the product.
(ERR_CORE_INTERNET_URL_RETRIEVE when calling Internet_HTTP_Post 0x40010275)"

Any assistance in trying to fix this matter would be appreciated - please let me know of any additional info you need and I will try to provide it.

First check WINE's internet connectivity by running:

Code: Select all

wine iexplore.exe http://www.winehq.org/

ok, tried to run iexplore.exe (I believe the code sent was to be used through the shell) and got the internet explorer to show up on winehq.org. I also typed in another website just to verify it has internet connectivity. Is there any way to copy pasta the bash terminal text - Ctrl-C seems to just terminate the current command.

In gnome-terminal, copy is Ctrl+Shift+C and paste is Ctrl+Shift+V.
Selecting the text to copy is done by left click - dragging the mouse.
It should work in other X terminal emulators too.

Is there any error message output in the terminal when you launch Hero Lab from the command line?

I was poking at this a little bit and got the following message when I tried to launch the herolab update

There is a problem with the certificate for this site.
Do you want to continue anyway?
The update process fails when selecting yes.

Looks like it's a web certificate issue.
I'm getting an There was a problem with the certificate for this site error,
but it's not allowing the connection when I click yes

Having a similar problem - have a ticket out with the HL folks, but I'm betting its something on the Wine processing the certificate side.

PlayOnLinux and other third party software is unsupported here.
Try to launch your app with plain wine before asking further help.
And remember to post any wine output you get from the terminal.

Code: Select all

cd ~/.wine/drive_c/whatever
wine whatever.exe >wine.log 2>&1
Replace whatever in the commands above with proper path and executable name for your windows app.
wine output shall be in ~/.wine/drive_c/whatever/wine.log.

Ok, not trying to be a jerk, but I didn't install through PlayOnLinux, but having the same/similar problem so I don't thini it's a PlayOnLinux issue. From what I can discern it looks like it's an issue with the Website's certificate. The program's tech support mentioned another user found that the "new certificate issuer was not on the default list of recognized certificate authorities" if that helps focus the problem. If I were under winblows the program's website tells me I'd need to open IE, go to tools and under the internet security options I can either A) lower the security rating or B) get updated certificate.

Ideas?
If it helps I'm on Linux Mint Qiana / Ubuntu Trusty on one PC and Linux Mint Nadia / Ubuntu Precise on the other. Both are running Wine 1.62
Both had no problems with the program prior to the cert. change (e.g. updates would run fine).
Here's the wine.log from the run.

Wine uses the certificates on the host system. After the certificate change, did you import the new one into your OS? (As to how to do that--ask your distro. Procedures vary.)

It looks like the CA's are listed in my list though one mentions RAS which I see in the output is causing an error/ listed as not supported could that be the problem?

Make sure that you install the new certificates system-wide.
I don't think web browsers on Linux install certificates system-wide as IE does on Windows.
As dimesio said, ask your distro about it.

Hi, I apologize for the absence, work has a terrible way of keeping one away from one's computer :)

After buckling down over this weekend and trying a couple of options, I found that installing and using 1.4.1 as my Wine version had fixed the problem on my desktop. I haven't completely tried all of the Wine versions, but based on the number I have tried, I believe the cut-off line falls somewhere around the 1.5 set for some reason. If anyone can check this out for me it would be most appreciated.

Thank you all once again for all of your assistance on this matter, and here's to hoping that Lone Wolf makes a native version of Hero Lab (not holding breath).
