Ubuntu 14.04x64 - Python for Windows won't install

Post by UbuntuSupahFly »

I can play Skyrim and Oblivion just fine through WINE, and the next logical step of course is modding. Well after multiple fails with Blender, PyFFI, and the NIF Python script extensions for Blender on Linux natively, I figured I would go through WINE and do it all on Windows instead. Well, that fails too. I didn't use the Distro install because I applied the custom work-around from http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=18070 in order to facilitate installing Adobe CS4.

Summary:
  • uname -a reveals Linux the-black-beast 3.14.4-031404-generic #201405130853 SMP Tue May 13 12:54:33 UTC 2014 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
  • My WINE Prefix is 32-bit, version 1.7.19. The games play just fine.
  • Blender installed just fine
  • PyFFI won't install because it can't find Python, which won't install no matter how I do it.
  • Python 2.6 does not install from the Windows .MSI from python.org. It fails with a dump.
  • Python also fails using winetricks --no-isolate python and that fails with this message: Note: command 'wine msiexec /i python-2.6.2.msi ALLUSERS=1' returned status 5. Aborting.
Here's what I see in the terminal when I try to install Python, either my self or via winetricks:

Code: Select all

Now, to be certain, I tried on another machine with the distro version of WINE (also Ubuntu 14.04) and Python fails to install on it as well with almost the same error.

So... is it just me or is this looking less like a WINE issue and more of a Ubuntu 14.04 issue? The problem is, I'm by no means an expert, so if possible, I'd like a second opinion to tell me if I'm crazy or not!

I suppose, if I REALLY wanted to go to desperate measures, I could make some space, create an NTFS partition in it, and run dual-boot. Or, I guess, run XP on a VM, but I don't think my system can run it very smoothly.

I just tried winetricks python26 in a clean, 32 bit wineprefix on openSUSE in 1.7.19, and it installed without any problem. The difference could be the distro, but if I understand correctly, you have been trying to install this to an unclean wineprefix, and that could be the problem.

I feel like such a n00b now.

I renamed my old .wine, and ran winetricks --no-isolate python and it worked beautifully, so I guess I'll have to export the relevant registry entries to .REG files, copy the Python files to my "proper" wine folder, and import those .REG files.

Or I suppose, I could just install Blender and all that in the new prefix, and continue to use the original one for the games, because that would be less work. :P

Either way, thanks for the help!

Well, it's mostly working now, except for this:

Code: Select all

Application tried to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
The explorer process failed to start.
However, Blender still launches, so I guess it's not a huge deal. Just wondering, since this is actually a clean prefix (until I installed Blender, PyFFI, Python 2.6, and misc vcredist_xxxx's) why it's complaining now if everything else seems to be running.
