Wine program comes up with number of users and activex error

Post by chiron »

An update of Ubuntu 13.10 to version 14.04 failed, forcing me to do a clean install of the latter.
Reinstalled Wine and have a problem with one important program called "MIMS Annual" that has a large database of medical information that I require for my studies.
It comes up first with a box that states:

Code: Select all

Error detecting number of users: 429
ActiveX component can't create object.
Then the MIMS logo appears followed by a box with:

Code: Select all

ActiveX component can't create object.
I have re-installed the program several times and I have installed Internet Explorer 7 to make sure ActiveX is installed, to no avail.
The frustrating thing is that it ran OK on Wine under Ubuntu 13.10
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Paul.

When you reinstalled the program, was it to a clean wineprefix? If not, try that.

You didn't say what Wine version you're using. If it's not the latest development release, upgrade. If the problem persists, post terminal output. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

Thank you for looking at this.
I am not sure what Wine version I am running; it is a clean install on a clean install of Ubuntu 14.04, so it is the default version I downloaded from Ubuntu.
I am sorry, but I am not sure what the wineprefix is all about. I had a look in q4wine but it shows nothing under the prefixes tab.
Anyhow, here is the log file:

It may be a poor Ole install, although other programs seem to run fine, only this one gives problems.

Q4Wine is not supported here. This forum is for plain Wine only.

You can tell what Wine version you have by typing

Code: Select all

wine --version
in a terminal.

Code: Select all

Try winetricks mdac28 jet40.

Thanks for that,
The Wine version is 1.6.2
I tried the "winetricks mdac28 jet40", and although I could see no problems or errors during the install, it has made no difference; the same problem persists. Perhaps I need to uninstall and re-install the program in question?

Just a follow up, as I have had some time to spend on this issue.
Visited dozens of Websites to try to get a handle on what the error means, and established it was a SQL database mdac and jet40 problem.
Downloaded mdac27 and jet40 for Windows XP and copied these to their respective winetricks folders. Tried to force reinstall jet40 (winetricks --force mdac40), with the results that there were multiple errors that seemed to be related to a damaged mdac27 or mdac28 install.
Executed from the terminal: winetricks --force mdac27
This installed without errors.
Then from the terminal: winetricks --force jet40
This time jet40 installed without errors.
Executed the program and no errors showed; success, problem fixed.
Paul.
