Unable to install MS office

Post by Gadgetguy »

Hello all,

I am trying to install MS Office 97 using Wine (Ubuntu 13 or 14 - tried both) - using a genuine MS Office install disc.

After I enter the MS office serial - there is an error message, complaining about a problematic osetup.dll

I also tried Playonlinux and Crossover office - they all lead to the same result: installation stops with the osetup.dll message (the message says that the file is missing).

The file is there, and the exact same install disc works with no problem whatsoever in Windows or in an Oracle Virtual Box in Ubuntu.

So is this a bug with Wine? Is there a fix?

Thank you for any ideas!

Thank you

The only bug I know of for the Office 97 installer is http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3689, and the error message from that is about being unable to register accwiz.dll. The workaround for that is to not install Access. You could try that, though I don't think your problem is the same.

I just tested the Office 97 installer in 1.7.18, and other than that old bug it works fine here in a clean 32 bit wineprefix; no message about not finding osetup.dll. If your wineprefix is not clean or not 32 bit, try that. You could also try upgrading Wine if your version is older, though the installer should work in older versions, too.

If it still doesn't work, post terminal output, including the command used to run the installer.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I did quite a bit of research with this. It seems up until Office 2003 all works fine ( I tried office 2003 and it works). But office 2007 (that is what I am trying to install) or office 2010 often does not work - and gives the above mentioned error message.

I am using by the way the most recent wine etc. - as my install is brand new ( just installed ubuntu a couple of days ago from scratch on a c720 chromebook)

Does it work for you for office 2007?

Thank you again

So the "Office 97" in your original post was a typo?

I don't know where you've been doing your "research," but it's obviously not the AppDB, which rates the Office 2007 and 2010 installers as gold and platinum. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... ion&iId=31

I just retested both installers in 1.7.18, and both still install fine. Follow the instructions in the AppDB howtos.

Thank you again for the reply - yes, sorry Office 97 was a typo .

The research I have done was related to the dll problem. I have found many people complaining that MS Office 2007 and MS Office 2010 does not install (they were complaining not on the wine forum - but on various other, ubuntu etc. forums).

I will try step by step the AppDB instructions and will post the results. Thank you for your patience!

Update: I have tried from scratch.

This is what I did:
1. Made sure that I have the most recent version of wine
2. Went to the folder which has my MS office files - double clicked on setup.exe
3. Wine started to install
4. Got the prompt for the Office 2007 serial - entered my serial
5. After a short while I got a prompt: Setup cannot find Enterprise.WW\EnterWW.Cab. Browse to a valid installation source and then click ok.

The problem is: the requested file is in the location it should be. Using the exact same files I can install Office in windows...

Any ideas? Thank you for your guidance and your patience with me.

I have tried this now so many times - in crossover; Playonlinux etc. - and always have this kind of a message.... (the file "osetup.dll" is in the same folder...

When I go to Wine configuration it says Wine 1.4.1 - is this the right version?

If not, how do I get another version if Ubuntu - Saucy thinks this is the most recent one?

I have tried one more thing - updated Ubuntu to 14.04.

That gave me a newer version of Wine - which seems to work now with office.

Thank you all for your patience!
