What would happen if i ran a windows virus through wine?

Post by Dreysman »

Hey winehq, i have been using wine happily for a long time :) but one thing that i thought about today was What would happen if i ran a windows virus through wine? I have mapped folders and stuff that things get saved in my home folder will it mess with my OS X?, or will it only mess with wine settings? For example if theres a virus that deletes your documents folder. I have my documents folder mapped to my home folder, would it start deleting stuff there?

Thank you for your help.

A lot of malware simply crashes in Wine, but for something that does run, it can do anything your user has permission to do. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-3cb8f05 ... 4e305a0459

Thats sad :(. What is the best way to protect myself from it?

Is there anyway to see exactly which files wine are doing stuff with, and make it not do anything before i type my password in?

what is virus?
A self replicating app that controls itself and causes data theft.
Now you predict what would happen.
Just like our moderator said that most of the virus crashes in wine then don’t worry
Beware of malware because they have one universal job, exposing your private files and data files
have fun
