After this discussion, I have decided to give the ATI/AMD fglrx drivers another go... and immediately remembered why I gave them up in the first place.
That was version 8.5. Now, two versions after (yes, I've overslept a whole release, and I feel fascinatingly relaxed after that), the problem persists.
Running WINE in fullscreen results in display corruption, symbolically called "Checekerboard of Doom", because, well, it looks like a checkerboard.
Anyone around here have an idea what to do about it? (apart from not using full-screen)

I understand. So, in essence, this is a very known bug (I've suspected as much), and the two mentioned workarounds would be
1) preloading another libgl version or
2) using the NoDRI option
Can anyone tell me what are the pros and the cons of each one, and is there any other workaround known?
