Hi everybody,
Actually, i have a laptop with this configuration :
- Intel Core I5-3230M
- Nvidia GTX670MX
- 4GB RAM
I think to buy a new desktop with this configuration :
- Intel I5-4440
- Nvidia GTX760
- 8GB RAM
My question is about the performance in game (with wine) between this 2 configurations. With the laptop and Assassin's Creed's game (AC to AC Revelations) / Mass Effect's games, i have approximately between 15-25 fps.
On Windows, there are a gains of performance for these games between the conf #1 and #2...
But on Linux + Wine, the gain of performance can be interesting ?
Thanks for your answer,
Max

Re: [Wine Performance]Laptop VS Desktop
Berillions really there is always a higher performance in a desktop version of the same video card compared to laptop version. Reason desktop does not have cooling restrictions on the video card like the laptop has so Desktop version can run at higher clock-speeds for longer. Yes most people are not aware lot of laptop video cards keep on down clocking to avoid burning lap or hands of the user.
There are other factors. Like if that laptop is a intel nvidia graphics hibrid its performance will be highly crippled under Linux.
Sorry I cannot tell you how much gain. Highly compact case desktops with poor cooling can have performance issues as well. Heat is your enemy.

Re: [Wine Performance]Laptop VS Desktop
Thanks for your answer but i have an other question
Actually on my laptop, i must to disable UseGLSL to improve the performance in game like Assassin's Creed series, Splinter Cell Conviction or Mass Effect series. (10-15 fps to 20-25 fps)
The bad performance with GLSL enabled is a problem from Wine itself or the laptop can be the cause ?
There is a possibility to have better performance on a desktop + GLSL enabled ?

Re: [Wine Performance]Laptop VS Desktop
Berillions as with most performance things with wine they are many parties to blame.
Desktop most likely will have the same kind of problem as laptop over UseGLSL but the desktop should be able to be a little faster.
There are command stream patches around that have not merged mainline yet. Then there is also the factor that a lot of video card drivers under Linux don't multi thread the GLSL code inside them.
So Wine + Videocard drivers + what game requests= bad performance. Nice shades of grey.
