Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
I use a chromebook Acer C720, downloaded Crouton to install Ubuntu Unity desktop and then from Ubuntu Software Center installed Wine Windows Program Loader (3rd down when searched for Wine).
I am so far unable to successfully run anything via Wine. I don't understand why, either. Primarily I have attempted trying Project 64 v 1.6 (which was installed to my flash drive previosly) and Steam (which was standard download for windows, but installed to my flash drive).
When I attempt to run Steam, it says "Updating Steam" with a progress bar. THen it goes to the Steam login screen, and I successfully log in. It then needs a computer authentication code. I check my email and enter the code, to which it waits a couple seconds and says in a separate diologue box, "The program Steam.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvienence."
Any ideas?

Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
You didn't mention what Wine version you're using. Current Steam will not work in any version older than 1.7.8, so if you're using an older version, upgrade. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35030
As for Project64, what exactly is the problem you are having? According to the AppDB it should work. http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=5779

Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
I downloaded Wine via the Ubuntu Software Center yesterday, so I would imagine I would have the newest version. I will have to check, though. (currently there is a problem that I am locked out of the chroot so I apologize for not having this information yet)
As far as PJ64, it will not recognize any plugins in the plugin folder. A diologue box will pop up for each one. After the attack of popups, the project 64 screen will load, but will not play any ROMS due to the fact that there are no plugins loaded. My Project 64 runs fine on a windows computer. Currently, I have AziAudio.dll (May 6, 2005), Jabo_Direct3D8.dll (April 1, 2005), Jabo_DInput.dll (Mar 26 2005), Jabo_DSound.dll (Mar 20, 2005), RSP.dll (Mar 20, 2005), Jabo_Direct3D6.dll (Mar 16 2005), NRage_DInput8_V2.dll (Aug 18, 2004), Zilmar_Audo.dll (Aug 18, 2004), NoSound.dll (Aug 18, 2004), Adaptoid_v1_0.dll (Aug 18, 2004), glN64_v0.4.1.dll (Aug 18, 2003)

Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
I wouldn't assume that at all. Packages shipped with the distros are often out of date. If you didn't add the Wine PPA, you definitely don't have the latest version.bobis09 wrote:I downloaded Wine via the Ubuntu Software Center yesterday, so I would imagine I would have the newest version.
Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
So now that it is installed already, how do you recommend I add the ppa?
Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
Do I need to uninstall first?

Try it.
Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
Okay sorry to post so much, but neither chromeOS nor my ubuntu netsurf browser are able to open the install links. I added the PPA already
Re: Wine won't run steam (or anything else)
So use the command line as described at the bottom of that page.
