Battle for Middle Earth PC-DVD

Post by kjekk »

[note this is about the first game, not BFME2]

I was able to run the autorun and installation for the game on my iMac (late 2012, 10.9 Mavericks) from the DVD which I have in a Samsung external USB drive, but playing the game has been a problem because Wine can't find or read the disc. I find it interesting, though, that when my DVD drive is empty, Wine says "Please insert disk number 1" and after I put in the BFME disc it recognizes something is in there, but says "Please insert the correct CD-ROM, select OK and restart application." I can restart it as many times as I want with the disk in but it will still give me the error message.

When the disk is in, my drive configuration has D: mapped to /Volumes/LOTRBFME. Just for kicks, I copied all of the contents of the DVD to a folder and then mapped D: to that folder, but still nothing. In the advanced settings, I can manually set the type of drive to Autodetect, Local hard disk, Network share, Floppy disk, or CD-ROM which makes me wonder if the fact that the game runs on a DVD is the problem.

The Wine appdb shows gold test results for BFME on Linux as recent as 2011, so I think it shouldn't be this difficult on OS X, am I right? If anyone has a solution to this game in particular, or getting Wine to recognize a USB drive on a Mac, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
