Risk of Rain slow FPS

Anyone have an idea why Risk of Rain has such a low frames per second? I would like to buy the game, but I want to make sure it will work before I buy. So I tested using the demo from the Risk of Rain website, and I was wondering if anyone has a fix for it. Thanks! (I am on OS X, don't think it makes a difference)
