Trouble installing games

Post by roshiie »

Hey all, sorry in advance for any missing information you need.. Relatively new at this whole thing, and it's starting to get frustrating. >:( I copied the last Terminal messages I got when I tried to install a game. The game installation pops up, but I get an unexpected error every time it goes to actually INSTALL it. Below are the messages. Let me know ANY information you need, and where I can find that.. Thank you so much in advance for any help/advice given!

What wine version do you use? Just run "wine --version" to get this one.
What games are you trying to install? Does it happen for all games? Do the games have appdb entries (see http://appdb.winehq.org/ )?

Using 1.6.1, tried Tera, SWTOR, Dragon's Prophet, and Silk Road. Happened to all the games. Beginning menus went through just fine, but when the install bar prepared to cross, got the Unexpected Error. I just checked Tera (The main focus) and it does have an Appdb entry (12971). Also, after reinstalling a few things, this is the new error message..

Hi roshile,

I've checked the requirements for your listed games: it looks like Tera, Dragon's Prophet and Silk road all need DirectX9. You could get the native DLL-Files from Microsoft via Winetricks and try once more to install. Altough first, have you tried to install the games in a clean Wineprefix? If not, I would try that first. To set up a clean Wineprefix, enter the following line into your terminal:
WINEPREFIX=/PATH_WHERE_YOU_WANT_A_CLEAN_WINEPREFIX winecfg
(Path may be for example: WINEPREFIX=/Users/roshile/Games/)

You'll get there a new folder .wine created with its basics (IE, drive_c, Program Files).
Now, try to install once more the games.

If this won't help, it may has to do with missing DLL's from DirectX9 because a lot of games require them to be able to get installed. At this point I need to know how you had installed wine? Over MacPorts? Or compiled from another source? Because when you had got it compiled over MacPorts, getting Winetricks is as simple to install:
sudo port install winetricks

Otherwise, you check the official winetricks site: http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks

From there, once you've got winetricks, type in Terminal:
winetricks list-download (You'll get an overview of the available files which can be downloaded)
winetricks list-installed (Will show which programs are already installed)

Ok, to get DirectX9 which is abbreviated as d3dx9, type into Terminal:
winetricks d3dx9
This will get you DirectX9.

Well, I could be totally wrong with my suggestion needing DirectX9 for a successful installation of the games, so don't expect too much  .

Alright, so I typed WINEPREFIX=/Users/roshile/Games/ (because to be honest, I'm not really sure where I should have put the path) and I didn't get a response from Terminal, it just went to the next line.
This - http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ Is how I installed wine. I tried going to the http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks and it told me to right click a link and save as.. But that wasn't an option.. I tried download as, and it saved it in a text format.. I also tried wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks in Terminal... No avail =( It said command not found.. I even tried sudo port install winetricks and got the same response: command not found. Went ahead, just for grins to see if winetricks list-download would work, and got command not found. Runnin in circles here. =/ Would help if I knew a bit more about my OS and what not, but alas... I am ill informed. If you need any information from me, just let me know.. If you tell me what/where to go, I'm more than happy to comply.

As a side not, when I type in "wine" I get this message: err:service:load_reg_string Error 1804 while reading value L"Group"
err:service:scmdatabase_load_services Error 1804 reading registry key for service L"BRDriver" - skipping
wine: cannot find L"C:\\windows\\system32\\program.exe"

Not sure if this helps.. But thanks so much for the reply. I hope I've provided more useful information. =P

Hi roshile,
This - http://www.davidbaumgold.com/tutorials/wine-mac/ Is how I installed wine.
Following David Baumgold's tutorial, you have compiled Wine over homebrew, right? I'm not familiar with homebrew, so I can't help you out following that way. I've installed wine (the newest developer version Wine 1.7.6) over MacPorts which is very convenient for me because it makes upgrading and installing packages very simple. So, my suggestion, you install wine once more over MacPorts (it will take its time, up to three hours). A difference worth considering choosing between Homebrew and MacPorts is, that Homebrew works without the 'sudo' (Administrator) command whereas MacPorts does (which means when installed and compiled with 'sudo', it is compiled/installed as root --> regularly when just one person using the PC, this person has Administrator rights). If you're willing to do so, get MacPorts following the link below:
http://www.macports.org/install.php

Once you've chosen the MacPorts Install-Package for your OS X (Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard?) and successfully installed it, you can install Wine typing into Terminal (Note: You need OS X 10.6 or higher. You can't get the latest Developer Version of Wine installed on Leopard 10.5 due to cmake):
sudo port install wine-devel (The compilation takes up to three hours)
I tried going to the http://wiki.winehq.org/winetricks and it told me to right click a link and save as.. But that wasn't an option.. I tried download as, and it saved it in a text format.. I also tried wget http://winetricks.org/winetricks in Terminal... No avail =( It said command not found.. I even tried sudo port install winetricks and got the same response: command not found.
When it will have been finally compiled, I would first recommend you to try once more installing your games  . Since the developer version of wine comes with an implemented DirectX alternative. If you still get errors then, we may can try to install DirectX over Winetricks once more (Getting winetricks over MacPorts is as easy getting wine-devel)

Let me know when you've managed running your games.

Hey! Thanks so much again for the reply.. I'm in the process of going through the steps, I went ahead and got the macports bit installed.. But after attempting sudo port install wine-revel, I got more errors.. I noticed there's one part the computer keeps getting hung up on, and that's the Command Line Developer Tools.. I've tried looking at all the ways people are installing them, and none work for me. They're not on the apple downloads section, they're not in my downloads bit on Xcode itself, and when I type xcode-select --install, it prompts me to download the command line tools first, so I say okay.. It goes halfway through the search then errors out with "Can't install the software because it's not currently available from the Software Update server"

I have a feeling this is causing tons of issues.. =/

Also, just incase it's unrelated, this was what happened:

Hi roshile,

Ok, Command Line Tools can be downloaded under XCode itself. Have you already installed it? OS X is coming with a native installed one. To make sure to check, search in the AppStore: XCode. You will see there if it is already installed or not on your Mac.
Alternatively, you can download manually a suiting version for your OS on: https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action (AppleID needed  )

So far so good, open XCode and select in the main bar menu 'Xcode' --> 'Preferences'. Then, select the tab 'Downloads' and there you can see 'Command Line Tools'. Let it be installed.

Try now once more to get wine compiled and installed over MacPorts:
sudo port install wine-devel
Roshiie:~ MacBook$ sudo port install wine-devel
---> Computing dependencies for wine-devel
---> Dependencies to be installed: bison gettext expat libiconv gperf ncurses m4 flex fontconfig freetype bzip2 libpng xz zlib pkgconfig gnutls autoconf perl5 perl5.12 gdbm automake gmp libidn libtasn1 libtool nettle p11-kit curl-ca-bundle desktop-file-utils glib2 libffi popt libxslt libxml2 gstreamer010 gzip texinfo gstreamer010-gst-plugins-base gnome-vfs gconf dbus-glib dbus gtk-doc docbook-xml docbook-xml-4.1.2 docbook-xml-4.2 xmlcatmgr docbook-xml-4.3 docbook-xml-4.4 docbook-xml-4.5 docbook-xml-5.0 docbook-xsl gnome-doc-utils intltool gnome-common p5.12-getopt-long p5.12-pathtools p5.12-scalar-list-utils p5.12-xml-parser iso-codes py27-libxml2 python27 db46 db_select libedit openssl python_select sqlite3 rarian getopt gobject-introspection cairo libpixman xorg-libXext xorg-libX11 xorg-bigreqsproto xorg-inputproto xorg-kbproto xorg-libXau xorg-xproto xorg-libXdmcp xorg-libxcb xorg-libpthread-stubs xorg-xcb-proto xorg-util-macros xorg-xcmiscproto xorg-xextproto xorg-xf86bigfontproto xorg-xtrans xorg-xcb-util xrender xorg-renderproto gtk3 at-spi2-atk at-spi2-core xorg-libXevie xorg-evieproto xorg-libXi xorg-libXfixes xorg-fixesproto xorg-libXtst xorg-recordproto xorg-libice xorg-libsm atk dbus-python27 py27-gobject gdk-pixbuf2 jasper jpeg tiff hicolor-icon-theme pango Xft2 harfbuzz graphite2 cmake shared-mime-info xorg-libXcomposite xorg-compositeproto xorg-libXcursor xorg-libXdamage xorg-damageproto xorg-libXinerama xorg-xineramaproto xorg-libXrandr xorg-randrproto orbit2 libidl policykit gnome-mime-data libtheora libvorbis libogg orc lcms2 mesa makedepend xorg-dri2proto xorg-glproto xorg-libXmu xorg-libXt xorg-libXxf86vm xorg-xf86vidmodeproto

What you can see on Terminal is perfectly fine. These listed programs are all dependencies necessary to be compiled before wine-devel is able to be compiled and installed. That's the reason why it takes so long the first time you want it to be compiled over MacPorts.

What you can see on Terminal is perfectly fine. These listed programs are all dependencies necessary to be compiled before wine-devel is able to be compiled and installed. That's the reason why it takes so long the first time you want it to be compiled over MacPorts.

Cheers mate,
Maexel

The thing is, I've gone into Xcode-preferences-downloads... The Tools aren't even THERE. :( They're not anywhere in that tab.. I'm not sure why, but it's frustrating.. Lol.

Also, the list of programs is fine, but below that you'll see an error I received.. That's the part I was trying to point out.

Okay, redownloaded xcode, FINALLY found the command line tools, downloaded, ran it, looked like everything went fine.. but when I did the xcode-select --install it told me I had to get the developer tools?? Doesn't make any sense.. Then it went in another big circle.. said the same error I got earlier.

This of course, is without me having completed the step of xcode-select --install.. as that won't work. So, that's probably the cause for THIS error.

Hey roshiie,
Roshiie:~ MacBook$ xcodebuild -license

Agreeing to the Xcode/iOS license requires admin privileges, please re-run as root via sudo.

Roshiie:~ MacBook$ xcodebuild -license

Agreeing to the Xcode/iOS license requires admin privileges, please re-run as root via sudo.

Roshiie:~ MacBook$ sudo xcode build -license
Password:
sudo: xcode: command not found
The command is wrongly spelled:
sudo xcodebuild -license (Note: there is no space between Xcode and build)

This should open you the license agreement where you can agree to at the end of it. After accepting the license, try once more to get wine-devel over MacPorts compiled and installed:
sudo port install wine-devel
Error: Processing of port wine-devel failed
Roshiie:~ MacBook$ port -f activate expat
Error: Insufficient privileges to write to MacPorts install prefix.
If you should get the error again, about activating a certain program like expat in that case, type the following line:
sudo port -f activate expat (Note: The error appeared because you haven't executed the command with 'sudo')

When you execute a command with 'sudo', you 'tell' the program you have administrator rights, such as overwriting existing files.

That's the error message i get now. I figured it has something to do with me not being able to run xcodebuild --install, as it keeps taking me through the prompt of installing the Command line developer tools.. See some of my previous posts for the issues on this. I did manage to get the download off the site for the tools, and I ran it, and it said all software was installed... but it's still prompting me when I run that command... and every time I tell it to get the command line developer tools that it's PROMPTING me to get, it errors out saying unable to find or something.. I put the error message above in the post.

Hi roshiie,

I may be wrong but I think the error with Xcode is caused because you haven't successfully agreed to the license agreement. So Xcode first needs your approval to its license agreement before it runs (likewise installing other programs when not accepted its agreement, they won't run/be usable).
Roshiie:~ MacBook$ xcodebuild -license

Roshiie:~ MacBook$ sudo xcode build -license
You couldn't have agreed to the license since its command needs to be run as administrator:
sudo xcodebuild -license (Note: The last line 'sudo xcode build -license' was run with administrator privileges but the command is typed together: no space between Xcode and build)

Nah, I got it to work last night with the license agreement, I already accepted it before I got the above mentioned issue.

Hi roshiie,

Ok, what comes to my mind: Have you updated MacPorts with its selfupdate command? This might can cause an issue because the Portfiles are not up to date. The latest version of MacPorts and the updated port trees, you'll get typing into Terminal:
sudo port selfupdate

Try once more to install wine-devel. We'll get to run your games  .

Hey,

So, you could install Tera and launch it, did i understand right? I've tried it myself installing the game. What was working:
  • - install Setup
    - launching
I haven't waited till the patch was downloaded (actually don't want to play the game myself), so couldn't see if it would run afterwards. Anyways, you say, when you start the game over the launcher, it crashes?

Can you specify the Error-Message (not the code from Terminal)? What is it saying? A missing Xmllite.dll?
First, I would try to repair within the launcher itself. Under the 'Play'-Button should be 'Launcher-Preferences' from where you can select 'Repair', right?

Because:
What I've found under the App-Database (http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=25812) is, that the game can't be started till xmllite.dll is copied to ~/TERA/Client/

If it still won't start after repairing, I would try copy the maybe missing Xmllite file manually to TERA/Client-folder:
  • - Open the .Wine-Folder (type into Terminal: open .wine)
    - Go to ~/drive_c/windows/system32/ and search for the Xmllite.dll-File --> Copy it (Cmd + c or 'Edit' --> 'Copy')
    - Change to ~/Program Files/TERA/Client/ and paste the dll-file there (Cmd + v or 'Edit' --> 'Paste')
Start the game once more over the launcher .

Actually, we can't INSTALL the game.. Once I run the exe through wine: wine tera-setup-hc.exe then it loads the installer, I click next through the steps, but when it gets to the part where the install bar shows up, it errors out with: "Error: The program Hcteraloader.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." From there, I pasted above the error msg I get when I open it for details.

Hey,

Wondering why I could install it without getting an error msg… Both our wine versions (1.7.6) have been the latest when runned the installer. Neither is there a missing dependency since you could compile wine over MacPorts, right?
Can you start other .exe-Programs like Wordpad for example:
wine wordpad ? or
winemine ?

Try once more creating a new WINEPREFIX, typing into Terminal:
WINEPREFIX=/Users/YOUR_USER_NAME*/Games/Tera/ winecfg *don't copy the letters in Capital but insert your User name (roshiie? or what it is)

This will create you a new .wine folder in USER_NAME/Games/Tera/(drive_c)/etc…
You don't need to set anything in the shown Wine Configuration, just close it again. Try once more to run the installer…

If it won't work, no idea what causes the error since I'm not confronting a single problem during the Setup.

So, when we did wordpad, it DID open for us, regardless of the errors listed on the page.. When we did winemine it did the same thing, it DID open.. I even played a quick round to make sure it worked. After that, we did the wineprefix command you see in the above pasted.. Make sure I entered that in right. Does it have to be the name of your computer? Or can you just make up something? We're not sure what the comp's named, so we did her name, Rose. After that, we closed the settings menu that popped up, and tried cd downloads, then wine tera-setup-hc.exe, and had the same issue we previously have.

Hey,
wine: Unhandled page fault on execute access to 0x00000000 at address 0x0 (thread 0037), starting debugger...

Unhandled exception: page fault on execute access to 0x00000000 in 32-bit code (0x00000000).
I think this is the line where the error is described. It's in Hex-Code which I can't 'read' neither understand what is going on… :?
What makes me wondering is the fact that we both have the same Wine version compiled and installed but I can install the launcher and start it but you're given an error.
I've tried another approach with PlayOnMac which is maybe a more user-friendly way to install the launcher since it comes with a GUI (Graphical User Interface). If you want to try it, I've written a step-by-step guide which will get you to install the launcher (Note: I don't know if the game will actually run because once you start the launcher it wants you to download and apply a patch before you actually can start the game over the 'Play'-Button. While I'm writing this guide the Patch is about to download (more than 5 hours), so I couldn't try that out  ):
  • - Download and install XQuartz (which may is already done when have installed MacPorts): Open 'Service Utility Programs' and scroll down to the bottom where you can see an X11-Icon. Doubleclick it and it will redirect you to the link where it can be downloaded. Install it.
    - Get PlayOnMac following the link: http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html
Install it. Get a Tera specific pre-compiled wine: http://www.playonlinux.com/wine/binaries/darwin-x86/
Select PlayOnLinux-wine-1.5.5-Tera-darwin-x86.pol and download it. Change the ending term .pol into .tar.bz2 and let it be extracted. You will have a Folder created with the name 'PlayOnLinux-wine….' where the extracted files are stored. Open it and the folder 'wineversion'. Copy the folder '1.5.5-Tera' which is the Tera specific pre-compiled wine.
    - Choose the menu bar 'Go to' in the Finder while pressing 'Alt'-Button and open the Library. There you find a folder 'PlayOnMac'. Open it, as well as the 'wine'-Folder and the 'darwin-x86'-Folder. There you paste the '1.5.5-Tera' folder.
    - Start the App PlayOnMac (during the first Start-up it will download some fonts). Switch to the tab 'Configurations' and select in the bottom left corner 'New'. An assistant starts up which helps you setting up a 'Virtual Drive' which is actually the same as a new WINEPREFIX in Terminal  . So click 'Next' and select '1.5.5-Tera' as wine version --> 'Next'. Choose a name for the 'Virtual Drive' which is actually the WINEPREFIX (for example Tera Rising) --> 'Next' Wine will be configured (An error msg appears about 'Gecko' which can be ignored: just abort).
    - Now you can see the WINEPREFIX (Tera_Rising or whatever you've named it) under the PlayOnMac Configurations. Close the 'Configuration' window and select 'Install' with the Add-Icon which will open you an Installation-Menu. On the bottom left corner select the Option 'Install a program which is not listed' which will open you another assistant (Installation-Wizard). Click 'Next' and choose the second option 'Edit an existing application' --> 'Next'. Tick the option 'Show virtual drives' and select your created WINEPREFIX (not the default!). 'Next'. Select the second option 'Configure Wine' --> 'Next' which will open you nothing else than the Wine-Configuration menu known over Terminal command winecfg  . Abort and you can see now the Search/Scan-Button from which you actually can choose now the TERA-Setup.exe. Let it, hopefully, be installed :D (An X11 window pops up which will take you trough the installation process. 'Drive C:' and 'Program Files' are just fine as installation path. PlayOnMac will then ask you to create an Alias where you choose TERA-Launcher and an Alias on your Desktop will be created as well as in PlayOnMac Overview.
    - Start Tera with the 'Execution'-Button or double click and the launcher should appear
Next step would be downloading and install the patches… which really takes its name (The download hasn't finished yet after writing this guide  )

Hope this one will work out for you now!

Cheers mate,

first thing I noticed, is that when I go to the http://www.playonmac.com/en/download.html website, it gives an option for Snow Leopard and Lion, but none for maverick. I am running OS X 10.9.. That won't matter will it? Still running the instructions you provided.. ;)
