wine only works after closing it

my problem is the following:
i am using wine to run football manager 2008, and the program starts nice
however, before you get the window which displays "start a new game" etc.,
I will have a black screen; I can only get the the window just mentioned by closing wine. Wine does not close immediately: it first displays the screen (giving me the hope that is working) for a few seconds, and then closes itself.

what is the problem? why will it only start working on deactivation?

i am running wine 1.1.2 under ubuntu, and I did try to run it with the visual effects on "none"

thanks for the tip. I tried to run in it using the terminal, and now it worked

but i don't understand why...
